WILLCOX — No. 12 Willcox hosted No. 11 Thatcher in a one-way game. The Lady Eagles piled on the runs every inning, taking the win, 22-4, in five innings.
Willcox head coach Trevor Ward said, “We didn’t play like a number 12 team today; we struggled. I had four freshmen on the field today, but we’ll get it worked out. We’ll win that play-in game, and then we’ll go to state on Friday and shoot for the best.”
Thatcher piled on nine runs in the first inning alone. Sydney Shupe kicked it off with a solo homer. Layla West also crushed a homer that same inning.
Home plate remained elusive for Willcox until the fourth inning, where the Cowgirls picked up two runs, and then two more in the fifth.
Thatcher picked up a pair of runs in the second, four in the third, three in the fourth and four in the fifth before running out of innings.
Willcox’s Maddy Tunks and the bullpen battled on the mound, giving up a combined 22 runs over 28 hits, striking out two and walking four. Tunks also led offensively with two singles and a run. Jaszlyn Felix, Ryleigh Terry and Ashley Kee all got one hit and one run each.
Thatcher head coach Bryan McBride was unavailable for comment.
Thatcher’s Samanth Korsten went three innings before being rested for the next game. Korsten gave up no runs on one hit, striking out four and walking one.
Korsten and Sydney Shupe both led offensively with three runs over four hits. Gabby Romero scored three runs on two hits.
