WILLCOX — Locals celebrated World No Tobacco Day with quizzes and a raffle.
Kendra Allen from the Cochise County Health Department Prevention Services set up a booth at the Northern Cochise Community Hospital foyer May 31. Quizzing individuals on the hazards of smoking, Allen gave out information as well as prizes for spinning her wheel. Allen also brought a lung display, which inflated when visitors stepped on the pump.
“This is the first time we’re doing it here,” Allen said. “World No Tobacco Day is an annual event on May 31 sponsored by the World Health Organization. It’s a day to educate people on the harmful effects of tobacco use, offer free resources to people who want to quit, and we’re partnering with NCCH to spread that message today.”
Allen told the Range News that the use of combustible cigarettes has gone down in teens and adults. However, e-cigarette usage has skyrocketed.
“We’re always excited here to become healthier. NCCH is trying to help people become healthier, and we’re always excited to have people come here to do that with us,” said Ainslee Bull, public relations coordinator at NCCH.
