Members of Sulphur Springs Valley Electric Cooperative are getting calls telling them that the company is going to turn off their power for non payment within the hour unless they give the people calling on the phone payment over the phone.

SSVEC DOES NOT call  members and attempt to get payment over the phone.  SSVEC suggests that members who receive these calls verify their status with SSVEC.  The number that  is calling and the number they want to call back is 480-779-8247.  When you reach them they answer “disconnect department” and attempt to get your banking information over the phone or ask you to get a cashiers check or money order and they will send someone by to pick it up.

SSVEC has reported this to both local and federal law enforcement.  This “scam” has been used often in the past, but mostly in Phoenix and Tucson.

Once again, If SSVEC members are contacted, SSVEC asks them to call us or stop in to verify.

Sounds like the scam I have read at http://www.callercenter.com/blg/articles/electric-company-phone-scam/ where the scammer apparently demands money to be wired after claiming that the recipient missed paying the utility bill. But it's a bluff and the caller has no association whatsoever to the utility company.
