Desert Reign concerts canceled


Three Desert Reign concerts scheduled at New Life Fellowship this week in Willcox have been canceled. The concerts were set for Wednesday, Feb. 27, Thursday, Feb. 28 and Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m.

Desert Reign is a CGMA multi-award winning band and vocal group of the decade, as well as Hall of Fame members.


Lady golfers to meet March 13


Hello lady golfers, new and old! Let’s get together to discuss and share ideas and decide on a start date for our 2013 golf season. Meet at Twin Lakes Golf Course on Wednesday, March 13, at 5 pm. Golfers of ANY caliber, please join us, we’d love to have you. A lot of new and exciting things are happening at the golf course this year….and the greens are excellent!

Girls softball registration, board


Willcox Girls Softball Board Members will be at Safeway on Friday, March 1, from 4:30 to 6 p.m. to register girls from ages four-and-a-half to 14 years of age for the 2013 Softball season. Board Members will also be available to answer any questions you may have. We will accept registration forms until March 15; you can give your registration forms and payment to any active Softball Board Member. Little League sign-up March 2


Willcox Little League sign-ups will be held Saturday, March 2, from 10 a.m. to noon at Keiller Park's ball fields.

Registrants need three proofs of being a Willcox area resident and a copy of their birth certificate.


Willcox Cowbelles Dinner Dance


On Saturday, March 9, join the Willcox Cowbelles for an evening of western entertainment at the Marguerite Cook Memorial Scholarship Dinner Dance at the Willcox Elks Club. The festivities begin with a silent auction, raffles and social hour at 6 p.m. A prime rib dinner will be served at 7 p.m. followed by a live auction. “The Yarbrough Band” will provide western swing dance music from 8 p.m. until midnight.

Tickets are $35 per person for the dinner and dance and $10 per person for the dance only. Payment for Dinner-Dance tickets must be received by Friday, March 1; dance only tickets may be purchased at the door. Open seating, doors will open at 5:30 p.m. No minors (under 18 years of age). Apply for Stewart FCE scholarship


Stewart Family & Community Education will be giving two $500 scholarships in their Hazel Wilson Scholarship program this year. Scholarship applications are available at the public library, at the high school counselors’ office and at the FFA office or by calling 384-4161.

To qualify for a scholarship, an applicant must be a graduating senior or recent graduate of an area school and must have a background in 4-H and/or FFA. In addition the applicant must be enrolling in a four-year college or university, junior college or trade school. The applications are due in by April 15 and should be mailed to: Stewart FCE, 411 N Bowie Ave, Willcox, AZ 85643.

Scholarships will be awarded at the High School Awards Assembly in May.


Carlson Creek honors military


Carlson Creek will be honoring those in the military by offering special flights for only $5 to all those active military and military spouses from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Saturday, March 2 in the tasting room. The special flights will include our signature glass and complimentary sweets with each tasting at our winery.


John Nilsen concert March 2, at WUMC


Recording artist,singer/songwriter John Nilsen will be in concert in the Sanctuary at Willcox United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 2, starting at 3 p.m. .

With 240 annual performances and national tours of the United States, including performances in all 50 U.S. States, Europe and Asia, he has earned a devout following of listeners and with his international distribution, his popularity continues to grow. Nilsen is an innovative performer who creates an intimate repartee with his audience. “As a performer, I like exploring beyond the boundaries of my recorded songs. It gives me the chance to offer something special, spontaneous and personal to my audience. The entire performance hinges on the connection not only between the players, but with the audience as well.”

‘Have a cupcake for Cupcake’ bake sale


The Second Annual “Have a cupcake for Cupcake” Bake Sale will be held from 10 a.m. until we run out of cupcakes, on Friday, March 8, in front of the Safeway store in Willcox.

All proceeds from this bake sale will be donated to the “Sarah Rose Catherine Broeder Memorial Fund” for the Northern Cochise Community Hospital (NCCH) Auxiliary Nursing Scholarship.

County equine networking dinner


Cochise County Equine Networking Dinner Anniversary will be held on Tuesday, March 5 at 6:30 p.m. at the Horse Shoe Café in Benson. No cost, just price of your dinner. It is a one-year anniversary celebration with special surprise. All horse people invited to come socialize and share events, news and/or equine items for sale/trade to new and old friends. Call to Willcox-area artists for show


Calling artists of all ages! Saturday, March 30, TRUST Art & Design will present a local art showcase at Coronado Vineyards, 2909 E. Country Club Dr., Willcox.

Thomas and Kim Johnson, owners of TRUST Art & Design, explained the inspiration for this exciting event: “Over the years, we have met many amazing Cochise County artists working in all sorts of styles and media. We decided to put together a fun community event to shine a spotlight on the variety and quality of the work being done by local artists. We currently show a collection of artwork at Coronado Vineyards called ‘TRUST the selection.’ We think it is a perfect setting to bring the community and artists together.”

For this show, TRUST is seeking submissions from artists living in Willcox and the surrounding areas. Work will be considered from artists of any age and any level of experience. All artists are encouraged to inquire. To learn more send an email to:, including photos of their work and a brief introduction about themselves and their artwork. The deadline for submissions is Sunday, March 10.

If the artist’s work is selected or if TRUST, the artist will be contacted with more details on the submission process.

There is no submission fee for artists and each artist may submit up to five pieces for consideration.

TRUST Art & Design is owned by Thomas A. Johnson and Kim Johnson. Their main fine art gallery is located in the historic 1917 Willcox Bank & Trust building on Railroad Avenue, along with the Keeling Schaefer Vineyards wine tasting room. There will be no admission fee to enjoy the art.


Brooks Brothers scholarship


The Brooks Brothers Scholarship Program is sponsoring two $1,000 scholarships; one each to a male and female graduating senior who plans to attend a college, university, or trade/technical school in the fall of 2013.

Applications are now available in Cheryl Patterson's office at Willcox High School. They must be completed, with all supporting documents, and returned to Mrs. Patterson by 4 p.m. on Monday, April 8.


Head Start offers services to families


Child Parent Centers, Inc. Head Start and Early Head Start is offering services to families with pregnant women and children from birth to age four.

Comprehensive services are provided to low-income families at no charge to participants, including: Center based and home based services, nutritional snacks and meals, individualized educational planning, educational opportunities for parents, services for children with special needs including severe disabilities, vision, speech and hearing screenings, parent and child group times and social services referrals.

Child Parent Centers are now taking applications. Children born between Sept. 1, 2007 and Aug. 31, 2008 are eligible.

Services may be available for pregnant women.

Willcox Elks to hold Bingo soon


Beginning on Thursday, March 7, and continuing every first and third Thursday of the month, the Willcox Elks Lodge will hold Bingo.

Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and play begins at 6:30, running 15 games a night, playing packs, and starting at $8 to $12. Last game played will be for the jackpot. Jackpot starting at $200 and increasing $10 until won. Money to be paid out is based on percentage, so more players means more money.


Senior lecture on shingles March 8


The Senior Enrichment Center at Northern Cochise Community Hospital will present a lecture on shingles. The lecture will be held at the Sunsites Community Center, 1216 E. Treasure Rd., in Pearce on March 8, from 11 a.m. to noon. Snacks and drinks will be provided. The presenter will be Dr. Angela Schroedl, DNP/ANP-BC. Relay for Life in Willcox


Relay For Life of Willcox will be held from 6 p.m., on Friday, April 12, to 7 a.m., on Saturday, April 13 at Willcox High School, 480 N. Bisbee Avenue. Opening Ceremonies will be at 6 p.m.
