The 62nd Annual Rex Allen Days is quickly approaching. What would a Rex Allen Days Celebration be without a concert by Rex Allen Jr.? Yes, there will be one this year. One show will be held at 6:30 p.m., in the Willcox High School Auditorium on Saturday, Oct. 5. Rex promises this show will be a super production, with appearances by Johnny Western, Pedro Gonzales-Gonzales Jr., Maddie Allen Cartwright and Bix Crary.
Several things about this show that will make it very special and spectacular like no others. This will be Johnny Western’s final public appearance. As he rides off into retirement, you can be sure he will make this one of his finest performances. His career has spanned more than six decades, from radio and television to movies and personal appearances. Johnny was invited along with Rex Allen Jr. to tour China, where they were the only entertainers ever to perform on the Great Wall of China. We will miss him, but wish Johnny all the best.
Rex Jr. will be inducted into the “Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame” at the concert. Rex Sr. was inducted into the AMEHOF in 2007. This will make two associations that will have a father and son in their list of inductees, the other being the “Western Music Association.”
This year will also be the final Rex Allen Days show in which Rex Jr. will produce and star. Rex says, “I will always be here for Rex Allen Days, I promised my father.” Rex Sr. did the shows for 25 years, and in 1977 Rex Jr. took over. He has done them for the past 37 years. He said, “I have done them 12 years longer that Dad did, I think it is time to step down, too”.
As a special treat, to show our appreciation for Rex and Johnny, there will be a Dutch Oven Dinner (by invitation only) in their honor on Friday evening.
Rex will be available for a meet-n-greet and for questions and answers along with his family and friends at 5 p.m., on Friday in Windmill Park next to the Rex Allen Museum.
