Summer school at Ash Creek

Enroll in Ash Creek Elementary Summer School Program now. The program is funded through Title I and is free to all students grades 1-8, from all schools.

Ash Creek School is located at 6460 E. Highway 181 in Sunizona.

Strengthen math, reading, and writing skills! Keep learning alive and fun this summer.

Individualized intervention in reading, writing and math instruction focused on Arizona Common Core State Standards, project-based learning and arts-integrated approach.

Open to all children (regardless of school attending) in 1st – 8th grades, from June 17 through July 11, 8 a.m.-Noon, Monday- Thursday (except July 4th), with a culminating performance and potluck on July 11 at 6:30 p.m.

Registration is open through Monday, June 17 if space is available.

BBQ fundraiser June 21 

 

Bonita Elementary eighth-grade girls are having a BBQ dinner and dessert auction to raise money for the People to People Leadership Conference in Washington D.C.  Please come and support these great girls who will be representing the community. 

Join us for dinner on Friday, June 21, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the First Southern Baptist Church on the corner of Wasson and Cochise in Willcox. Tickets are $10 for adults, and $5 for 10 and under. Dessert auction starts at 6 p.m.  Bring your appetite!  Take out is also available. Tickets are now on sale, or you can purchase at the door! Concert tickets raffle for RAD

 

Rex Allen Days announces two raffles. RAD has received from KHIL 1250 Radio two sets of concert tickets to be raffled off.

The first is for Brantley Gilbert.  The Wednesday, July 3 concert will be at Salt River Fields in Phoenix.  We have two sets of two tickets and two sets of four tickets to the concert.  Raffle tickets are $1 each or six tickets for $5. Drawing will be held at the Break Shoppe at noon on Wednesday, June 26.

The second is for Tim McGraw.  The Saturday, Aug. 10 concert will be at Salt River Fields in Phoenix.  We have one pair of tickets to give away.  Raffle tickets are $1 for each or six tickets for $5.  Drawing will be held at the Break Shoppe at noon on Wednesday, July 31.

Public pool hours, classes

 

The Willcox public swimming pool is open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., from Tuesday through Sunday. Pool is closed on Mondays. 

Night swimming will be on Saturdays, from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Lap Swimming will be from Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. 

Age six and under are free and age seven and over pay $2. Sunday is Dollar Day.

Swim lessons: First session will be from June 10 to June 21, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. or from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Second session will be from July 8 to July 19, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. No lessons on Mondays. 

Classes: Moms and Tots – Beginners (must be at least three-years-old); Intermediate and Advanced Swim Lessons are $25 per session per child. We will only take 10 students per class per session. These classes fill up fast. The beginner classes usually fill up in the first couple of weeks.

Little League closing night  

 

Willcox Little League will hold its Closing Ceremony on Monday, June 17 at Keiller Park. 

The Majors will hold its championship game at 5 p.m. and the closing ceremony will follow that game. The Willcox Majors league tournament begins Friday night, June 14, with two games and finishes Monday night.

All are invited.

 

Willcox Fire Dept. fundraiser

 

The City of Willcox Volunteer Fire Department is holding a raffle to raise funds to replace its out-of-date turnouts and other safety equipment.The cost of one set of fireproof turnouts is $2,000.

The first prize in the raffle is a full day’s race car driving instruction (Raptor Motorsports) in a Porsche 944 at the Inde Motorsport Ranch. Other prizes include two nights at the Holiday Inn Express plus a $20 gift card at Big Tex BBQ; and a 46-inch LCD TV.

Tickets are $25 per ticket or five for $100.Ticket sales are limited to 2,000, with the drawing on Sept. 11.

Knights raffle for gas BBQ grill

 

The Knights of Columbus organization is holding a raffle for a gas barbeque.

The funds will go to those in need of help. The tickets are $2 per ticket or six tickets for $10.

WUSD hours for summer

 

Willcox Schools District Office will be open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Elementary, Middle School and High School offices will be open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

 

NRCD work-group meeting

 

The Willcox-San Simon NRCD has rescheduled its annual Local Workgroup Meeting date to Thursday, June 13 at 8 a.m. at the Willcox Field Office of the Natural Resources Conservation Service, 656 N. Bisbee Avenue in the Safeway plaza. 

The July meeting will be July 25. All meetings are open to the public.  

 

Senior lecture on dementia

 

The Senior Enrichment Center at Northern Cochise Community Hospital will present a lecture on “Understanding Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease,” from 10 a.m., to 11 a.m., on Friday, June 14, at the Sunsites Community Center, 1216 E. Treasure Rd., in Pearce. 

Snacks and drinks will be provided.

The WASA tournament has been postponed to a later date to be determined. It was originally planned for June 22.

 The Elks is hosting its annual “Frustration Under the Sun” Tournament on Saturday, June 29 at 8:30 a.m. 

LCO Gamma Sorority will host its annual Ladies Golf Tournament on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 10 a.m.

Library summer reading program  

 

Join us this summer as the Elsie S. Hogan Community Library presents “Dig Into Reading” for our summer program. Readers from preschool through high school will explore our underground theme with stories, music, crafts, workshops and more.

City fireworks show fundraiser

 

The Willcox Fire Department is asking for your assistance in raising the $4,500 (halfway there!) needed for this year’s Annual Fireworks Display.

A $50 donation or any amount will help the Willcox Fire Department continue the great Fireworks show we are proudly known for!

If you would like to have a shell dedicated to someone or a promotion for your business, let us know by June 30, as this is the deadline for these requests.

Apple Annie’s grand opening

 

Apple Annie’s Orchard, the family-owned 27-year-old business has branched out.

The family fun destination has purchased and remodeled the former Stout’s Cider Mill building (just off of exit 340 in Willcox) and opened Apple Annie’s Orchard Country Store, a retail space open year-round. The Country Store is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and on weekends from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. A “Grand Opening Celebration” is scheduled for Saturday, June 15, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with food, prizes and fun for the whole family. 

  

Summer food service program

 

The Willcox Unified School District announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program for Children. Meals will be made available free to all children 18 years of age and under within the approved geographical area without regard to sex, race, color, age, handicap or national origin. Any person who believes that he/she has been discriminated against in any USDA related activity should write immediately to the Secretary of Agriculture, Washington D.C. 20250.

Serving days will be Monday through Thursday through June 27. Breakfast is served from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Willcox Middle School Cafeteria located at 360 N. Bisbee, Willcox.

Meals are free to all children ages 0-18 regardless of income.

Amount charged to non-program adults (ages 19 and above): Breakfast is $3.50 and lunch is $4.50. 

Methodist VBS starts June 17

 

Vacation Bible School at the Willcox United Methodist Church will be held Monday-Friday, June 17-21, from 9 to 11 a.m., with activities for kids 3 to 12 years old.  The camp is themed “God’s Backyard Bible Camp” at the church Fellowship Hall. 

Kids’ fun activities, craft projects, snacks and games, Bible stories, to guide youth of all ages to serve their families, friends, neighbors, community and Jesus.  

Too “old”? (13 and up) … but still looking for something interesting to do? You can be a helper for our teachers and staff.

 

Gymkhana fundraiser July 4th

 

Rex Allen Days, Inc. and WASA are excited to announce a gymkhana and play day on the Fourth of July in Willcox at Quail Drive Sports Park Arena.

Register for events starting at 9 a.m., first events at 10 a.m.  

Stick horse barrel and pole races, sack races, shoe races, prizes for winners.

All-around buckle prize for older participants for barrel and poles and flag events.

Longest Day Bridge Games 

 

The High Desert Hands Bridge Club of Sunsites will be sponsoring the Longest Day Bridge Marathon, sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge League as a fund-raiser for the Alzheimer’s Association, on Friday, June 21.  All bridge players, including party bridge, contract players, beginners or the more experienced players, are welcomed to participate.  This event will be held at the Sunsites Community Center, 1216 Treasure Road in Sunsites.  The games will begin at 5 a.m. and will continue through the day until midnight.

County Summer Conference

 

The Cochise County School Superintendent’s Office in conjunction with the Southern Arizona Regional Education Center (SAREC) is hosting the Cochise County Summer Conference for all teachers and administrators. 

The Conference is scheduled for July 10-11, at the U.of A. Sierra Vista and the Cochise College Campus. The conference consists of two days of self-selected sessions, offering full day Phase 1 (Overview) and Phase 2 (Implementation) State Standard sessions. The exciting Technology sessions will be half-day workshops. The cost for both days is $60, and includes meals and materials for both days. Professional development credit will be based upon the sessions attended.

Elks Golf tourney June 29  

 

The Elks Annual Golf Tournament will be held on Saturday, June 29, at 8:30 a.m. Cost is $55 per  person. Cash prizes will be awarded and lunch is provided. Proceeds go to scholarships, Clothe-a-Child and youth activities.
