The WHS cross-country team got off to a running start with strong finishes in the first two races of the season. Last Friday Willcox traveled to Thatcher and ran a course that was described as being different with flat fields by coach Calvin King. The top runners for Willcox were Eli Webster, 16th completing the course in 20:05, while Kendal Hale 21st had a time of 29:43 and Melody Motes, 34th, led the Willcox girls. The performance in Thatcher came after a strong performance in Benson by Webster who finished 4th overall and first-year runner Sarah Grimes, who completed the course in 30:17 and 8th overall. When asked about the team, King said, "The kids are coming around. We're very competitive and only getting better." The cross country team will travel to San Carlos today.
