1916-2010

Rose C. Allan, 94, died peacefully, May 28, 2010. Her husband, John, preceded Rose in death in 2001. They'd been married 65 years.

Born in New Jersey in 1916, Rose grew up there, training as a dental technician. After marriage, the couple lived in New York, then in New Jersey, where they raised their family, had their own businesses and became involved in local and state politics.

Rose became very active in the '50s, working to get the issue of voting machines for her county on the ballot. It was tough, but she did it: the measure won! Rose was recognized as the "First Lady of Ocean County." She also was elected Democrat County Committeewoman.

The family later moved to St. Petersburg, Fla. where they continued their work and activities.

Their last move was to Willcox, in 1976.

Rose continued her community work. She was instrumental in getting discount cards for seniors and organizing and initiating the Willcox Food Pantry.

From the beginning, she worked to establish a permanent Senior Center for Willcox. It was her goal for over 30 years; she was working for it 'till the end.

Rose was honored with the first Gus and Marsha Arzberger Award from the Cochise County Democrat Party in 2008 for her years working with them, her 58 years with the Party and her ongoing 'get out the vote' efforts, always fighting for her beliefs.

Rose is survived by her daughter, Barbara; her son Hank and his wife Marian; her three beloved grandchildren, Virginia, Elizabeth and Patricia; her grandsons-in-law Shaun and Steven; and her six adored great-grandchildren: Lauren, Patrick, Jack, Cathleen, Tatiana and Anastasia.

As matriarch, Rose will be missed by her extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins and their children across the country.

Rose said, "I've had a very full life. I've done so many interesting things and met wonderful people. I feel blessed."

Services are Friday, July 23, Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 215 W. Maley St., Willcox.

Rosary 9:15 a.m.; Eulogy 9:45; Funeral 10; Burial immediately following, Sunset Cemetery. Services by Westlawn Chapel.
