FIREWOOD PERMITS: Due to recent fire hazard materials reduction in the Chiricahua National Monument, 15 firewood permits will be available on a first-come first-served basis on Friday, Sept. 10 and Saturday, Sept. 11. The cost of the permit is $25 and it can only be purchased in person at the visitor center with a personal or cashier's check issued to National Park Service. The visitor center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The permit will allow the holder to gather one pick-up load of firewood from pre-established stacks. Due to the narrow, dirt road where the wood is located, no vehicles with trailers will be allowed into the loading site; four-wheel drive may be needed, depending on recent rainfall and road conditions. Only one vehicle at a time will be allowed in the wood pick-up area. This may lead to delays. Permit days may be cancelled or delayed due to inclement weather.

Entrance fees of $5 per person will be in effect. The federal senior, access, annual, or Chiricahua park passes may also be used.

Chiricahua National Monument is located four miles east of the junction of Arizona Highways 186 and 181. For additional information contact Ann Johnson at 520-824-3560 x 205.
