Job fair success

Published: Wednesday, August 25, 2010 12:24 PM CDT
We want to thank the Community of Willcox for supporting the Willcox Job Fair. The Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture partnered with Cochise County Workforce Development to sponsor a Job Fair at the Willcox Community Center last Thursday, Aug. 19. There were 16 businesses and organizations represented and over 80 job seekers who participated.

According to Cochise College Center for Economic Research, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for Willcox for June 2010 was 12 percent, four percentage points higher than the County rate during the same period. This offers a compelling reason to join together to try and help people in the community who are looking for work.

We would like to express our gratitude to several individuals and organizations that helped make the event a success. We have had a tremendous amount of support from the staff of the Elsie S. Hogan Community Library with our efforts to help the unemployed in Willcox. The Library hosted a Resume Workshop in advance of the Job Fair, and has graciously supported our Access Point, a computer station in their facility designed to assist patrons who are looking for work. Librarians Tom Miner and Sylvia Stewart are wonderful advocates. The City generously allowed us the use of The Willcox Community Center, oversaw the set up of the event. Oscar Hudson made sure everything was in place. Ralph Score and Camme Carlson-Watkins at Valley TeleCom stepped up to the plate by providing commercial time on the cable station, getting the word out to the public. Kathy Smith, the Director of the Willcox Chamber of Commerce and her staff, Theresa Palmer and Connie Bonner, were instrumental in the process.

Finally, we would like to thank all the businesses and organizations with tables at the event, and all the job seekers who attended. Suffice to say, it would be difficult to name everyone who lent support to this effort. It is a pleasure working in Willcox, a community who clearly cares about its members.
