Attorney General's Office Offers Free Foreclosure Awareness Video

Terry Goddard, Arizona Attorney General

The home foreclosure crisis has caused great pain for families across Arizona. Thousands have lost their homes to foreclosure and many more are at risk. And the problem is made worse by some unscrupulous companies and individuals who claim they can help consumers keep their homes, when what they are really doing is stealing money and making the situation even worse.

To help Arizonans and to provide valuable information regarding foreclosure prevention and how to spot a scam artist, the Arizona Attorney General's Office has produced an educational video <http://www.azag.gov/consumer/foreclosure/resources.html> and is providing it at no charge to nonprofit housing counseling agencies, faith-based organizations, businesses, libraries, schools and social service agencies throughout the state.

This free video is made possible by last year's settlement between the State of Arizona and Countrywide Financial Corporation. Please contact the Attorney General's Office at 602.542.2123 to request a DVD copy or you may view it here <http://www.azag.gov/consumer/foreclosure/resources.html> .

A new Arizona state law prohibiting "foreclosure consultants" from charging upfront fees for their services goes into effect on July 29. This new law gives added protection to Arizonans against loan modification and foreclosure "rescue" scam artists.

If you or someone you know is facing foreclosure, seek assistance promptly from your mortgage lender or servicer or a government-approved housing counselor. Distressed homeowners can be connected to free counseling services through the Arizona Foreclosure Prevention Help-Line at 1-877-448-1211. Additional information for homeowners is available through the Attorney General's Foreclosure Resource Center <http://www.azag.gov/consumer/foreclosure/> .

The Arizona Attorney General's Office has a variety of other resources available for homeowners facing foreclosure or who may have been a victim of a home loan modification scam.

And if you believe you may be a victim of a scam, please contact the Attorney General's office, Consumer Information & Complaints, 602.542.5763 (Phoenix) or 520-628-6504 (Tucson) or 800-352-8431 (toll-free when calling outside of Maricopa and Pima counties).

" That's great that the state AG is looking to advise people on foreclosures. If the AG can take it one more step and just educate the people on money management, then you would not have so many the foreclosure, and bankruptcy issues. It all starts with knowing yourself, knowing your budget and living within the budget. If you want to read about how I learn from my bankruptcy lesson, check out
