No flag on the casket

Published: Wednesday, August 18, 2010 2:03 PM CDT
The Catholic Church has a policy that forbids the placing of the American Flag on the casket of a veteran inside the church.

This is totally disrespectful of veterans who fought for our freedom, including religious freedom. This policy is an insult and a slap on the face to all veterans.

Many were wounded, some crippled for life and some gave their lives to protect and preserve all of our freedoms.

The Catholic Church has turned its back on all veterans. It does not respect them for what they did nor does it appreciate their sacrifice and shows no gratitude whatsoever.

My hometown, St. Marys, Pa. is a very patriotic town and came up with a great slogan, "No Flag on the Casket- No Money in the Basket."

The Catholic Church needs to get its act together and change that policy. It can be done! They changed the policy from not eating red meat on Fridays to it's okay to eat red meat on Fridays. To me, this is more profound than allowing an American Flag on a veteran's casket inside the church.

For the Catholic Church or any other church to forbid the flag on a veteran's casket inside the church is totally unacceptable.

" I am no big fan of any religion; but I'd like to know if there was some misunderstanding here, or if the policy really has changed.
My dad, a WWII Purple Heart Vet, died in 1990. His casket was wheeled into the Catholic church bearing the American flag. The flag was removed during the funeral "mass"; not because of policy, but because during the funeral mass, the casket is sprinkled with holy water and a crucifix is atached to the top.
At the end of the mass, and before the exit, the flag was proudly replaced atop the casket.
I am wondering if there was some mistake or misunderstanding on the part of the particular church in your case? "
