Interactive TV classes come to county schools
By Trudy Berry/County Schools Superintendent
Welcome back! I know we have an exciting year ahead of us. Addressing the state's financial difficulties has brought about change, but there are opportunities that come with every challenge. The County School office strives to provide resources to meet these challenges and has projects in place to address some of the needs.
ELECTIONS
School Board seats in all 23 school districts will be up for a vote in the November election. Locally, the number of seats available are: Willcox - 3, Bowie - 2, San Simon - 3, and Cochise - 2. The deadline for petition signatures is Aug. 4, and they need to be turned in to my office at 100 Clawson Avenue in Bisbee.
INTERACTIVE TV (ITV) PROJECT This fall, students sitting in any high school can participate in a Pre-Calculus class taught by a Cochise College instructor. This will enable them to earn college and high school credits at the same time. Or students can participate in a Spanish III class offered by a Willcox High School teacher, and Physics is also being considered.
The ITV project connects all of the county high schools to each other, provides actual time classes for students from all areas of the county, and no traveling is required. This project provides a cost savings for smaller districts that do not have qualified teachers for all subjects as they can now access these resources via ITV.
The ITV consortium also submitted a grant which could provide equipment upgrades and another bridge for ITV connections which will make expansion efforts possible. The County Schools' office has been providing training to School District Business Managers through ITV; and various ITV meetings are planned for next year.
NEW LAWS
Schools will now receive grades (A through F) replacing the past labels of Excelling, Highly Performing, Performing Plus, Performing, and Failing.
Districts that now have Kindergarten through eighth grade can expand to ninth grade.
High School students will be able to graduate in 10th grade and receive a Grand Canyon Diploma. They can then enroll in college, Career and Technical Education classes or take more high school classes.
Benson and Sierra Vista were approved by the State Board of Education to offer online classes for students who need credit recovery or a full high school curriculum via the computer.
Some of these changes certainly could provide efficiencies in our system and still provide a quality education for every student in Cochise County. I look forward to the challenge.
We are here to serve you! Have a great year!
