BENSON - Donald W. Kimball, who began his rural electric career more than 45 years ago and rose through the ranks to become Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Arizona's Generation and Transmission (G&T) Cooperatives, says he'll retire next year.

Kimball made the announcement during the Cooperatives' annual meetings in Tubac last week and said he would remain as CEO until August 2011 "to provide enough time to ensure a smooth and orderly transition."

"It's with a great deal of emotion but also with a vision of the future challenges facing these cooperatives and the electric utility industry in general that I've decided now is the right time for new leadership and a renewed commitment and for me to begin a new chapter in my life," Kimball said.

He said the timing for his retirement is part personal but also in the best interests of the Cooperatives, their employees and the people they serve.

"It's time for our electric utility cooperatives to determine how they will grapple with new challenges, from how best to develop renewable sources of energy like solar and wind, to working with a new generation of policy makers on everything from greenhouse gases to climate change legislation," Kimball said.

"And I decided the best thing I can do is to devote my best effort during the coming year to helping the Boards of Directors and Member owners determine that path, then step aside and let new leadership take them down it," Kimball said.

Kimball has been the CEO at Arizona's G&T Cooperatives for 22 years. His announcement prompted immediate reaction from the cooperative community.

"Don Kimball's commitment to these cooperatives and the cooperative ideals, at the local, state, national level, has been unparalleled in our industry," said Reuben McBride, president of the National Rural Utilities Cooperative Finance Corporation and president of the Board of Directors for Arizona Electric Power Cooperative, Inc. (AEPCO), one of the three Arizona's G&T Cooperatives whose operation was overseen by Kimball.

He's devoted not only his professional talents but also his personal commitment to excellence and above all, a genuine and caring attitude about the cooperative ideals and the rural members of the cooperatives we all serve," McBride said.
