Buffalo Soldier historic sites tour, Fort Huachuca
Sierra Vista, AZ. 6/7/10. Learn more about the renowned Buffalo Soldiers, the All-Black unit stationed on Fort Huachuca in the late 1800s through the turn of the Century, by taking a tour with the Southwest Association of Buffalo Soldiers (SWABS). Children are welcome, as this informative and educational excursion is appropriate for children over age 12.
The tours, of the Buffalo Soldier historic sites, are held the third Saturday of each month, and participants are invited to meet at the City of Sierra Vista's Visitor Center, located in the Oscar Yrun Community Center at 3020 East Tacoma, and board a bus for the tour. After the two-hour tour, plus additional time at the Fort Huachuca Museum, the bus returns participants to the Visitor Center.
The next tour will be held on June 19. The tour fee is $12 with water and snacks provided. The Visitor Center's representative will collect the fee by cash or check only. The bus will depart for Fort Huachuca at 11:30 a.m. and participants should arrive at the Visitor Center by 11:15 a.m. to have time to look at the maps and brochures of other Sierra Vista and local area attractions, tour fee collection, and verification of identification. Tour participants must be United States citizens. For reservations, which are required to ensure adequate seating, please call the Visitor Center at 520-417-6960 or 1-800-288-3861.
A SWABS representative joins the group at the Post Museum. Following an overview of the history of the Buffalo Soldiers at Brown Parade Field, the tour continues to several historic sites on the Post. One of the sites on the tour is the Black Officers' Club, where celebrated entertainers Dinah Shore and Lena Horne performed on stage, and Joe Louis boxed. This building is currently in disrepair and the SWABS are continuing to raise funds for the restoration of this site.
Fort Huachuca served as the home station for the Buffalo Soldiers for nearly 53 continuous years and their service and accomplishments are legendary. Not only were the endeavors of the Buffalo Soldiers well known during the Indian Wars, the soldiers also joined General "Black Jack" Pershing in the Punitive Expedition into Mexico.
Note: Fort Huachuca is an active military installation. United States citizens are permitted access onto the post with current and valid photo identification for all citizens over the age of 13.
