Community celebration planned for April 10
Safford, Ariz. - Mark your calendars for a daylong event hosted by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and its partners on Saturday, April 10. It is part of a national celebration of the 10th anniversary of the BLM's National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) designated by Congress in 2000. Throughout 2010, the BLM is hosting a series of tours and activities throughout Arizona and across the West. The Gila Valley event will begin at the Safford Field Office with a commemoration of the NLCS 10th anniversary. After a short ceremony, participants can chose from a variety of free guided tours to the Gila Box or Aravaipa Canyon. Tour topics will include history, archaeology, native fish, and wildlife.
Within the Safford area, the NLCS consists of the Gila Box Riparian National Conservation Area; six wilderness areas including Dos Cabezas Mountains; and the Baker Canyon Wilderness Study Area.
