Willcox won the team title and had five individuals crowned as champions at Saturday's middle-school conference tournament in Huachuca City. "We've been so close to winning in the past few years, so it was nice to finally win it and win it convincingly," said coach Patrick Macumber.
The Cowboys scored 280 team-points as all 16 of their entrants placed at least in the top-three of the Cochise Athletic Conference championships. Runner-up Benson was 56 points further behind at 224, while Bisbee, Huachuca City and Pomerene each trailed by more than 100.
The Willcox wrestlers who placed first were Wilbert Velarde, Raymond Rodriguez, Zack Placencia, Greg Villareal and Travis Regalado. Plus, six other finalists placed second. They were Seth Estes, Parker Osterman, Bryce Castagna, Tanner Hogue, Jarrek Nolan and Raul Angeles. The five other wrestlers who managed to make the semi-finals and finish third were Paul Broy, Nathan Tipler, Albert Miller, Josh Nolan and Aaron Rodarte.
"These kids went there to win that thing and I'm proud of them," said Macumber.
