Nikki Dunlap and the defending 2A state runner-up Willcox Cowgirls softball varsity are off to a 6-2 start after finishing third in the prestigious 24-team Wickenburg Invitational over the weekend. Willcox opened with a 6-3 home win over Empire on Wednesday. They followed by going 2-1 in tournament pool play at Wickenburg on Friday. Senior pitcher Adrienne Machiche picked up the Empire win and tournament wins over Santa Cruz, 2-0, and Moon Valley, 2-1, while Adriana Sinohui was the hard luck loser against Hayden 5-3 despite striking out 9. Machiche beat defending 3A champ Blue Ridge 14-7 and Estrella Foothills 6-3 in Saturday's championship round as the Cowgirls earned a semi-final berth against Palo Verde Valley. The California team beat Willcox 6-4, but the Cowgirls bounced back to get third place with a 9-2 pasting of Dysart. Dunlap hit .417 in those first 8 games, while Sam Miller, Alesha Ellis and Machiche were also outstanding at the plate, said coach Mike Patterson.
