Fall prevention course begins March 23 for Willcox-area seniors

Have you turned down a chance to go out with family or friends because you were concerned about falling? Have you cut down on a favorite activity because you might fall? If so, an eight-week program beginning March 16 in Willcox titled, A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls is a program for you.
The fear of falling can be just as dangerous as falling itself. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in severe physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. Many older adults experience increased isolation and depression when they limit their interactions with family and friends. A Matter of Balance can help people improve their quality of life and remain independent.
Falls are a major concern to older adults and for good reason. Most older adults have a fear of falling that can actually increase the risk of falls. The good news is most falls are preventable and falls are not a normal part of aging. To help older adults take more control our their risk of falling, the Southeastern Area Agency on Aging and the Northern Cochise Community Hospital have collaborated to bring a nationally recognized, evidence-based, fall prevention program A Matter of Balance to this area. This valuable class will be offered at no cost to older adults in Willcox and Sunsites beginning March 23.
A Matter of Balance is an eight-week course. Each participant will receive a workbook, and be instructed in gentle, balance-specific exercises designed to increase, strength, flexibility and endurance, all key components of better balance. Participants will have the opportunity to assess their living environment and learn about resources available to them for safety improvements. They will have the opportunity to speak to a health professional about their specific concerns about falls. Healthy snacks will be served in each session.
The classes will be held in Willcox at the Willcox United Methodist Church 124 South Curtis Ave. at the corner of Curtis and Maley. Class begins Tuesday, March 23, and will conclude Tuesday, May 11. Each two-hour class is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. The class will be held through a grant received by the Northern Cochise Community Hospital from the Area Agency on Aging.
Space in this class is very limited. Registration is required. To register please call 520-384-8575. For more information about falls and A Matter of Balance, please visit the National Council on Aging website www.healthyagingprograms.org or The Maine Partnership for Aging - www.mainehealth.org.
