Willcox Senior Center moving forward
By Carol Broeder/Arizona Range News
The Willcox Senior Center project continues to move forward.
A decision to waive more than $6,500 in city fees will be on the upcoming city council agenda on Monday, March 15, at 7 p.m.
It will appear on the agenda again after being unanimously tabled at the council's March 1 meeting.
Councilman Chris Donahue, who declared conflict of interest at the beginning of the meeting, abstained from voting.
"The City of Willcox has entered into a partnership with Northern Cochise Community Hospital to provide a senior center for the benefit of our citizens," said Supervisor Jeff Stoddard, the city's department of Development Services.
It will be a modular building located on hospital-owned property, he explained in his Feb. 17 letter to council.
The total cost of the building project will be about $90,000, which does not include the required environmental impact study, Stoddard said.
The fees being suggested for waiver were a building permit fee of about $2209.20, a sewer connection fee of about $1,540, and fees for the one-inch gas and water meters installed at the property line at $1,500 each, for a total of $6,749.19.
Stoddard explained that all amounts are approximate at this time.
He told the council it was the recommendation of his department to waive the fees for this project.
"The city is contributing grant funds to the project in the sum of $94,000, and the fees waived could be used towards the project, or to purchase equipment for the Senior Center," he said.
"We have ordered the modular building that includes approximately 3,000 square feet for the center, and are waiting for the results of the soil sample where the building will be located," said NCCH Community Relations Director Lineva Donahue.
"Our community members have been in need of a senior center for many years and NCCH is excited to be a part of this project," she told the Range News.
Donahue said that there are "a vast number of volunteer opportunities available at the senior center to choose from depending on your interests, talents and skills."
