"Know Your Native Plants" workshops

Published: Wednesday, March 10, 2010 1:45 PM CST
The second in a series of five workshops designed for small acreage landowners is "Know Your Native Plants" and will feature speakers that will help you identify the native plants in your area and MUCH more. The University of Arizona Cooperative Extension, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Hereford and Whitewater Natural Resource Conservation Districts, and Coronado Resource Conservation & Development have put together an agenda that will feature speakers on plant identification, soil suitability for plant type, planting for wildlife and water needs for landscaping. The workshop is designed to assist landowners in working "with" the land for greater productivity.

"Know Your Native Plants Workshops" will be held in the following two locations: March 16, 2010 at the Palominas Fire District Training Center and again on March 17, 2010 at the Double Adobe School in Mc Neal.

If you have a plant you have questions about, feel free to bring a sample of the plant for identification and your questions. Presenters will be the State Biologist and Range and Soil Conservationists from Natural Resources Conservation Service and U of A Extension Specialist and Water Wise Program Coordinator from the University of Arizona. The morning session will be classroom type presentations and the afternoon will be an outdoor "hands on" opportunity to learn about the native plants in your area.

Subsequent workshops will be held monthly with a different theme each month. April - Know Your Soils-Part 2, Web Soil Survey Information, May - Poisonous Plants and Noxious Weeds, June - Your Livestock and Your Land.

Sign-in and registration will begin at 8:45 a.m. with the event starting at 9:15 am and concluding at 2:30 pm. Cost will be $15.00 per person or $25.00 per couple, which will include lunch and a reference book.

Everyone is requested to register for the workshop no later than March 11, 2010 by contacting Kim Webb at the Coronado RC&D Office in Willcox, Arizona at (520) 384-2229 x124 or kim.webb@rcdnet.net , so we have an accurate count for the catered lunch and handouts.
