Get help in job search at community library

Willcox-area residents looking for work can get help in their job search thanks to the local library and Cochise County Workforce Development, Inc. (CCWD).

The Willcox City Council unanimously approved a "memorandum of understanding" between the Elsie S. Hogan Library and the county's workforce development team.

Formerly known as the Cochise County One-Stop program, CCWD had provided the library with a "gift computer" in December 1997, which was used "until it finally died in December 2007," said Library Director Tom Miner.

"The problem then was that they had no funding to update, upgrade and maintain their computer," he said in his Dec. 15 letter to the council.

"Technology changed dramatically during that time, and the computer and the software soon became outdated, but we continued to use it to provide a job resource for our community," said Miner, adding that the library has not had a dedicated computer to support this program for two years.

"Through this MOU, they have supplied us with a new computer and are willing to pay for service and repair of this equipment throughout its lifespan," he said.

"This is a good program that helps our citizens have access to county, state, and national job base networks, resume writing services, career counseling, and so on. They also provide training to allow us to provide better service to our customer/job seekers."

CCWD Outreach Coordinator Alison Van Gorp told the council, "Basically, we are putting a space in the library with a computer, which we are giving to the community to help job searchers who need extra assistance."

"We have trained the library staff to help people write job resumes and access jobs available through our system," she said at the Dec. 21 meeting.

"We are asking the city to maintain the computer and stock it with paper. If it needs repair, we will take care of that."

With its main office in Sierra Vista and a branch office in Douglas, CCWD is a private, non-profit organization that administers the Workforce Investment Act (WIA).

Its motto is, "Developing tomorrow's workforce today by building partnerships and providing leadership in employment, education, and training."
