Men seek help, then bind Cochise man
By Carol Broeder/Arizona Range News
Two illegal immigrants are in custody following a robbery Friday in Cochise.
Gilberto Quiroz-Moreno, 28, and Fernando Quiroz-Moreno 36, from Agua Prieta, Mexico, were charged with armed robbery, aggravated assault, motor vehicle theft, kidnapping, and two counts of burglary, said Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff's Office.
Both subjects are being held without bond, she said.
In a statement issued Monday morning, Capas gave the following account of the incident:
The sheriff's office received the call at about noon Friday from the small community southwest of Willcox.
Deputies responding to the residence found a 71-year-old man in the bedroom who had been tied up with duct tape.
The victim said that the Quiroz-Morenos came to his home on Thursday night, asking for food and water.
He told deputies that he had given them the food and allowed them to make several phone calls to Mexico and Douglas looking for a ride south.
The victim also told the Quiroz-Morenos that they could stay outside of his home throughout the night, which they did.
On Friday morning one of the men asked the victim to heat up some food that he had gotten from a neighbor.
The victim then reportedly went inside his home, closing the door behind him and went into the kitchen to heat the food.
The Quiroz-Morenos then entered the home, without his knowledge or consent, and approached him in the kitchen.
Once inside, the men grabbed the victim from behind while they held a knife to his throat and threatened him.
The Quiroz-Morenos then bound his feet with the duct tape, also taping his mouth, and put him on the bed in his room.
The victim told deputies that the two men then took a handgun and some cash from his home before leaving the scene in his 1965 Volvo.
He struggled to get off of the bed and began licking the inside of the tape to loosen it from his mouth.
The victim was able to get the tape away from his mouth and pull the phone off the side table before dialing 9-1-1 with his tongue.
Upon arrival, deputies found him still restrained with the tape on his hands and feet.
With the information provided, the sheriff's office issued an attempt to locate for the vehicle to all local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies within Cochise County, Pima County, and Hidalgo County, New Mexico.
At about 1 p.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that they were behind the stolen vehicle in Douglas and deputies responded.
The vehicle was stopped and the Quiroz-Morenos were taken into custody and booked into the Cochise County Jail.
The investigation continues.

" It's too bad that citizens have to suffer so that the corporations can have their cheap labor - chickens coming home to roost is no longer politically correct, but unintended consequences might apply "

" Might I remind everyone that similar crimes took place some time ago back east when migrants had to jump a whole body of water just to get here. They weren't deported, but faced certain consequences whether just or not. These stories rarely get talked about nowadays for obvious reasons. You can hate a race or group of people as you wish, but remember your roots even if they are not accurate. During WW2, Anglos never got stopped by law enforcement and asked if they swore allegiance to Hitler, but Asians were forced into "camps" in the west coast because they might have been linked to the Japanese(enemies) at the time. Do your homework, stop pointing fingers and make a difference. "

" Pathetic! When are we going to take back OUR country? For being the "smartest" super power, we sure let every country walk all over us and milk the daylights out of us-just to turn around and treat our citizens like this? Get rid of the trash and start protecting our own people instead of pouring our money every where else in the world-where it is only expected not necessarily appreciated.....Our government sucks "

" Yes, the corporations not being loyal to the USA is too bad as well. This country gave them the oppurtunity succeed and then once they have enough to globalize they screw the commonfolk here by laying them off for cheap labor.
Having said that, and being liberal on almost all issues....these illegals are not justified in coming into our country making/stealing/drug dealing Money just to spend it in Mexico. Everybody says the laws need to be enforced reguarding this issue. The truth to the matter is it DOES! Actually, I'm pro death penalty on this one. Send them back to Mexico and they just come back...no solution there. I am a White American and not racist...they are the racists...just look at Mexican employers and the % of whites and blacks (all races for that matter) they hire....hmmmm
The solution is not only enforcing the law, but making stricter laws for illegals...America can't afford them and it is that simple. "

" People like ths should go directly to jail and spent the rest of their rotten lives there. A 71 years old man trying to help and this is what he gets - they deserve life! Do not return them to Mexico lock them up. "

" It is a sad story. I don't believe in illegal immigration, but I do believe in human kindness. These two bad examples will stop people from doing the right thing. I am not saying give them a ride to Tucson..or even let them stay on your property..but give 'em water folks. These guys are truly just pieces of you know what and they are found on all sides of every border. "

" The elderly victim is fortunate to be alive to tell this story. He could have easily been murdered. I have to agree with Fred, the man should have called 911 FIRST. I hope he is not seriously harmed and that he is wiser today. We must do something to make our communities safer for the people who live in this area. It should have been done long before now. "

" How long can you milk this story? Long enough for me to want to respond I guess. If our government would actually strictly enforce labor laws that prohibit the hiring of illegal aliens and also put the GD border patrol on the border with sufficient numbers , then no one could come across except through an established checkpoint. But it won't happen because we don't want to offend Mexico or corparate america! "
