Brief-Bowie Makes A Difference During National FCCLA Week
Bowie members of the Arizona association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) will join more than 219,000 members in celebrating National FCCLA Week Feb. 7-13, 2010. This year's theme is "Grasp Greatness." During National FCCLA Week, members plan and carry out activities to address teen and societal concerns and show how Family and Consumer Sciences education can help then achieve the ultimate leadership experience.
FCCLA is a brand new Career and Technical Education Organization at Bowie Schools this year. Students involved in 8th-12th grade and taking new programs in Career Pathways, Culinary and Hospitality are members of this integrated leadership organization. Students in this first year have volunteered their time to painting over graffiti in Bowie, sanding elementary playground equipment, creating activities with Pre-K students and making birthday cupcakes for every student and staff member at Bowie Unified School District.
The new Family and Consumer Sciences program has encouraged students to apply their new career and technical skills to the real world through a simulated restaurant located within the school. Hospitality students design the environment, create advertising, take reservations and are the wait staff at the simulated restaurant. Culinary Students plan the menu, cook and plate the food served at the simulated restaurant. Career Pathways students assist with clearing and setting up table service. FCCLA has enhanced student learning, the school's educational offerings and provided real life community connections.
FCCLA: The Ultimate Leadership Experience is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences Education. FCCLA has more than 219,000 members and nearly 7,000 chapters from 50 state associations, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than 10 million youth since its founding in 1945.
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by student members. It is the only Career and Technical Student Organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
