City Council Candidates Forum
The public is invited to attend a City Council Candidate Forum on Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. at the Willcox Community Center, 312 W. Stewart.
The forum is being sponsored by the Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture for the purpose of introducing the public to the candidates. Make plans to attend this forum and hear the views of the candidates applying for a City Council seat. Those seeking council seats are: Gerald "Sam" Lindsey, Monika Cronberg, Paul Sheats, Larry Schultz, Bob Irvin, Jimmy Norris, and William Holloway.
The public is invited to submit written questions prior to the forum to the moderator who will then present questions to the candidates or you may submit your questions to the Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture.
Women's shelter plans discussion
The Northern Cochise County Service Network in cooperation with Willcox United Methodist Church will conduct a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 11 about getting a Women's Shelter functioning in Willcox. Our speaker at this meeting will be Mr. Charles Fisher, executive director of Catholic Community Services. Fisher will give us information about how to get started, regulations, ways and means, etc.
If you have interest in seeing a Women's Shelter in Willcox, you are invited to attend this meeting at the Willcox United Methodist Church, 124 S. Curtis Ave. at 9:30 a.m.

Willcox Cowbelles
dinner and dance
On Saturday, March 13, join the Willcox Cowbelles for an evening of western entertainment at the Marguerite Cook Memorial Scholarship Dinner Dance at the Willcox Elks Club. The festivities begin with a silent auction, raffles and social hour at 6 p.m. A prime rib dinner, cooked by the Elks will be served at 7 p.m. followed by a live auction. "Ted Scanlon & The Desperados" will provide western swing dance music from 8 p.m. until midnight.
Tickets are $30 per person for the dinner and dance and $10 per person for the dance only. Payment for Dinner-Dance tickets must be received by March 5; dance only tickets may be purchased at the door. Open seating, doors will open at 5:30 p.m. No minors (under 18 years of age). Miniature art show at Visitors Center
For the 14th year, the annual array of miniature and small paintings are on display at the Visitors Center on Circle I Road. This year there are 53 paintings from 13 states across the country. Subjects include everything from dogs, cats, horses, cattle and landscapes, to architecture and portraits. The paintings are from 5 x 7 inches and smaller to one on a piano key. Materials are watercolor, acrylics, oil paintings and scrimshaw, featuring a portrait of Rex Allen.
This amazing show will be open for viewing and purchase during regular Visitor Center hours until Friday, Feb. 26.
Willcox High All- Classes Reunion
The ALL-CLASSES reunion for anyone who graduated from Willcox High School, or attended WHS, and their spouses and children, etc. will be held Friday Aug. 6 through Sunday, Aug. 8, 2010. The registration will be done on line as much as possible to prepare for food, etc. Please email djbbeth@msn.com with your RSVP. Include number attending and any questions you may have about the reunion. Activities planned so far will include: Reception/registration on Friday, fun day at the park with parade on Saturday morning; and an dinner and music at the Willcox Community Center on Saturday night.
Alumni who would like to help on the Reunion Committee are welcome to come to our next planning meeting on Saturday, Feb. 20, 10 a.m. at the Moser residence, 270 N. Cochise Ave. Refreshments will be served.
Willcox FFA
Lightshow BBQ
On Thursday, Feb.11, in the Willcox High School Cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m., the Willcox FFA Alumni will be holding a Lightshow BBQ. For $6 and children under five eat free, you can receive a tasty full-meal deal served with a smile. Tickets can be purchased from any FFA member, picked up at the Willcox Agriculture Department or at the door! So come on down and support the Willcox FFA Alumni as they raise money for scholarships.
The Lightshow by the Cheer Squad will follow at the boys varsity basketball game.
Applications for CCF grant due soon
The Cochise Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Arizona Community Foundation, is currently inviting local nonprofit organizations to apply for grant funding from three of its funds: the Science, Math and Technology Innovation Fund, the John Lawrence Kurdeka Fund for the Environment and the Cochise Environmental Fund.
Any 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, public school or government entity serving Cochise County is eligible to apply for grant funding. Grants may be awarded in amounts as small as $500 or as large as $6,000.
Application guidelines are on the ACF Web site at www.azfoundation.org/grants. Organizations are encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible to Del Cabarga, Assistant Regional Director, via e-mail at dcabarga@azfoundation.org.
Applications must be submitted no later than 5 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22.
Dual book signing Feb. 13, Tombstone
The O.K. Cafe, on the corner of Third and Allen in Tombstone, will host a book signing Saturday, Feb. 13. Adele Crouch, local artist and author will be there with her children's book, How The Fox Got His Color. Joining her is Carmen Mercer, owner of the O.K. Cafe with her book America, DE-FENCE-LESS. Both authors will be available for you to purchase their books and have them personally autographed from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
Teachers' discount card available
As Arizona's K-12 teachers face potential cuts to the state's education spending, more than 30 Southern Arizona-based companies have offered to reduce their costs for any district, private or charter school teacher working in the region.
The initiative is part of the educational nonprofit Tucson Values Teachers' new "$10,000 for 10,000" discount card program, which offers more than $10,000 in discounts to more than 10,000 K-12 teachers in Pima, Cochise and Santa Cruz counties.
Teachers can visit www.tucsonvaluesteachers.org and print off their discount card. By presenting it with a valid teacher ID or a recent pay stub at a participating business, they can begin receiving deals on goods and services such as cars, financial services, home furnishings and spa treatments. The discounts will last throughout 2010.
Businesses such as Desert Toyota of Tucson, Commerce Bank of Arizona, El Charro Caf/ and Gadabout SalonSpas have decided to participate. Companies with a nationwide focus such as Wells Fargo, Walgreens and Loews Hotels are also offering select deals, while Tucson-area OfficeMax locations will cut and laminate the discount card at no charge to teachers.
Know Your Soils workshop Tuesday
The first in a series of five workshops designed for small acreage landowners will feature "Know Your Soils-Part 1" and be held in the following two locations: Tuesday, Feb. 16 at the Palominas Fire Station Training Center in Hereford and again on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at the Double Adobe School in Mc Neal.
Landowners are asked to bring a paper bag with quart sized sample of the soils on their land to the workshop. This workshop will provide excellent information for anyone interested in gardening or other crops on a small scale, raising pasture, or preventing erosion on their land.
Sign-in and registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the event starting at 9:30 a.m. and conclude at 2:30 p.m. Cost will be $15 per person, which will include lunch and a reference book. Couples will cost $25 and includes lunch, but only one reference book.
Everyone is requested to register for the workshop no later than Thursday, Feb. 11 by contacting Kim Webb at the Coronado RC&D Office, Willcox, Arizona at (520) 384-2229 x124 or kim.webb@rcdnet.net , so we have an accurate count for the catered lunch and handouts.
