Organize student records Jan. 6
"How to Organize Your Student's Records". This is the topic of our next Cope meeting for the Willcox School District. COPE (Coalition of Partners for Excellence) presents this workshop that gives parents, educators, and service providers several formats for organizing their students' records into categories or by the date of the information.
This is a hands-on workshop and should include student information brought by participants for organizing. This is a "make it and take it" workshop.

Grief support group in January
The Charles W. Leighton, Jr. Hospice Office, 524 W. Maley Place in Willcox will be starting another new educational "Art of Healing" Grief Support Group in January 2010. It will meet every other week for 8 weeks. We will be using new skills for coping including the use of music, humor, aromatherapy and relaxation. This group is also free of charge. Please call to sign up for the 2010 group.

AAMHO meeting Friday in Willcox

The Arizona Association Manufactured Home and RV Owners is a statewide non-profit organization representing manufactured home owners, RV owners, and park model owners at all levels of government-city, county, state, and federal. The purpose of AAMHO shall be to protect, preserve and improve the welfare, rights and benefits of its members and to educate and enlighten the public to these purposes

Registrations for the 17th Annual Wings Over Willcox Birding & Nature Festival (WOW) are being accepted at the Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture, 1500 N Circle I Rd, 520-384-2272 or online at www.wingsoverwillcox.com. The event dates for 2010 are Jan. 14 - 17. There are 44 tours available this year with many already sold out. Don't wait to sign up!
Join us for light snacks at the welcoming reception on Thursday, Jan. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Willcox Community Center, 312 W Stewart. Take this opportunity to meet and greet seminar speakers, tour guides, WOW committee members, vendors and event attendees.
The festival will feature a banquet on Saturday, Jan. 16 with Rich Glinski from the Maricopa County Parks and Recreation Department. His presentation is titled "Getting a Clue From Burrowing Owls". The banquet will be held at the Willcox Elks Club. Tickets are $25 each if purchased by Dec. 31 and $30 after that date.
Also included in the festival is a free Nature Expo occurring Jan. 15 - 17 at the Willcox Community Center. The Expo will include exhibits with live animals, nature information, nature related products for sale and much more. Bring your family and enjoy a day of fun and learning. Special activities for children are also available.
Free seminars covering topics on birding, astronomy, photography, bird painting, butterflies, bats, arthropods, lizards and much more will be offered Jan. 14 - 17 at the Willcox Community Center. Tours also leave from and return to the Willcox Community Center.

WOW poetry entries due Friday
A poetry contest for youth and adults will be held during the 17th Annual Wings Over Willcox Birding and Nature Festival (WOW), Jan. 14-17, 2010. The poetry contest theme is birds, nature or wildlife of Southeast Arizona. The poem should not exceed 20 lines and should be submitted to the Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture by Jan. 8, 2010. Contest entry forms are available at the Chamber.
Judging categories for youth will be High School, Middle School and Elementary School. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be awarded in each category. There is no fee to enter.
For the adult poetry contest, one first-prize winner will be selected and will receive two tickets to the WOW Banquet on Saturday, Jan. 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. In addition, the first prize winner will be asked to read the winning poem at the banquet. Lucy Baca is coordinating this contest and will select local judges. Prizes will also be awarded to the 2nd and 3rd place winners.
Divorce support starts Jan. 12
DivorceCare divorce and separated recovery seminar and support group: Meets each Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Willcox, starting Jan. 12. The program is free and lasts 13 weeks. DivorceCare features nationally recognized experts on divorce and recovery topics. Seminar sessions include "Facing My Anger," "Facing my Loneliness," "New Relationships," "Kid Care," and "Forgiveness." GED test Jan. 16; Register Jan. 4-9
Cochise College is planning to administer the General Educational Development (GED) exam on Saturday on a trial basis in the new year. The pilot program begins with a test date of Saturday, Jan. 16, and registration is now being accepted.
The college currently offers the GED exam on Wednesdays, but it is working to assess the need for it to be offered on a weekend.
The GED test will be given on Saturday, Jan. 16 from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the testing office at the Sierra Vista Campus. GED candidates can register to take the exam at the testing office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 6 through Thursday, Jan. 7; and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 9.
Registration must be done in person. Candidates will spend approximately 90 minutes filling out paperwork and taking a math practice test. A $65 GED exam fee must be paid at that time.
Two forms of identification are required. One must be a picture ID. For more information, contact the Testing Office at (520) 515-5447.
BLM seeks recruits for season's fire jobs
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Gila District is currently recruiting applicants for seasonal employment during the 2010 fire season. To serve on a fire crew, persons must be at least 18 years of age, have a strong work ethic, be able to pass a pack test and maintain good physical fitness, be available to travel out of state for extended periods of time, and be willing to contribute in a team-structured environment.
Applicants will be notified in May regarding their selection for one of the 20 positions on the crew. Recruits will receive classroom and field training that will enable them to safely and effectively tackle wildfire suppression.
The crew will be trained and ready for assignments starting later than month. While most fire duties will be in southeastern Arizona, some assignments may be out of state and last 14 consecutive days plus travel time. Emergency firefighters are hired on a call-when-needed basis and are only paid during training and fire assignments; pay is $17 per hour.
