Organize student records Jan. 6
"How to Organize Your Student's Records". This is the topic of our next Cope meeting for the Willcox School District. COPE (Coalition of Partners for Excellence) presents this workshop that gives parents, educators, and service providers several formats for organizing their students' records into categories or by the date of the information.
This is a hands-on workshop and should include student information brought by participants for organizing. This is a "make it and take it" workshop.

Lions Club New Year's breakfast
The Cochise Stronghold Lions Club in Sunsites will start the New Year with a Saturday breakfast on Jan. 2 at Sunsites Community Center from 8 until 10:30 a.m.
Join us and enjoy a breakfast for only $5.
The Lions Club also has a wheel chair and walker that are available for loan. Call Bob Weston at 520-826-1801 to make arrangements.
Lions members want to extend a thank you to everyone in the community that supported our yard sale. All profits from Lions Club events are used for community service projects.
Grief support group in January
The Charles W. Leighton, Jr. Hospice Office, 524 W. Maley Place in Willcox will be starting another new educational "Art of Healing" Grief Support Group in January 2010. It will meet every other week for 8 weeks. We will be using new skills for coping including the use of music, humor, aromatherapy and relaxation. This group is also free of charge. Please call to sign up for the 2010 group.

Tree-cycle this week at 250 N. Railroad
The City of Willcox will participate in the Christmas Treecycle Program. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality and Earth 911 are proud to present this year's 'Tis the Season to Treecycle Program. For more information on the community's Christmas tree recycling drop-off locations, visit Earth911.com web site or call Dawn Adame at 520-766-4213. This program is for city residents.
Curbside tree pick-up will be provided for disabled residents and residents with no transportation. From Dec. 26 through Jan. 1.
A drop-off location for "potted" Christmas trees will be at 250 N. Railroad Ave. "Potted" trees are trees that can be replanted, and they will be taken in from Dec. 26-Jan. 1.
Cut tree drop-off locations will also be at 250 N. Railroad Avenue, the corner of Delos Street and Railroad Avenue, from Dec. 26 - Jan. 1.
Wings over Willcox tour registration

USDA census of horticulture
The U.S. Department of Agriculture will soon conduct the 2009 Census of Horticultural Specialties. Taken once every 10 years, this census provides detailed information on horticultural production and sales across the United States.
"The Census of Horticulture will include producers of floriculture, nursery and other specialty crops," said Steven Manheimer, director of the Arizona Field Office of USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). "This is an opportunity for horticultural producers to share their voices and help ensure the continued growth and long-term sustainability of horticultural farming in the United States."
The results of the census are used by industry, government, academia and others, aiding in the development of sound programs and policies, research, and market analysis and business planning. "The results will help shape future decisions regarding availability of goods and services, community development, funding and other key issues," Manheimer noted. "In addition, the information can help producers stake informed decisions about the future of their own horticultural operations."
In December 2009, NASS will mail the Census of Horticultural Specialties to all known horticultural operations in the United States. Recipients are required to respond by February 5, 2010. NASS will publish the results in December 2010.
Census participants are guaranteed by law (Title 7, U.S. Code) that their individual information will be kept confidential. NASS uses the information only for statistical purposes and publishes data only in tabulated totals.
"As we did with the Census of Agriculture, we are reminding Arizona producers that the Census of Horticultural Specialties is their voice, their future and their responsibility," Manheimer said.

GED test Jan. 16; Register Jan. 4-9
Cochise College is planning to administer the General Educational Development (GED) exam on Saturday on a trial basis in the new year. The pilot program begins with a test date of Saturday, Jan. 16, and registration is now being accepted.
The college currently offers the GED exam on Wednesdays, but it is working to assess the need for it to be offered on a weekend.
The GED test will be given on Saturday, Jan. 16 from 7:45 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the testing office at the Sierra Vista Campus. GED candidates can register to take the exam at the testing office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday now through Thursday, Dec. 17. The college will be closed for the holidays Dec. 19 through Jan. 3. Registration also will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4 through Thursday, Jan. 7 and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Jan. 9.
Registration must be done in person. Candidates will spend approximately 90 minutes filling out paperwork and taking a math practice test. A $65 GED exam fee must be paid at that time.
Two forms of identification are required. One must be a picture ID. For more information, contact the Testing Office at (520) 515-5447.
Cowbelles saddle raffle continues
The Willcox Cowbelles are raffling former State Senator Marsha Arzberger's saddle as a fund-raiser for the Marguerite Cook Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund was established in 1977 and since that time scholarships have been awarded to area students majoring in an agriculture-related field.
The saddle maker, Fred Mueller, opened his first shop in 1891 at 1415 Larimer Street, Denver, Colorado. The shop continued to operate until the early 1950's. Mueller was known for making a sturdy, dependable saddle.

College finanicial aid, scholarships
Cochise College will accept applications for scholarships and financial aid for the 2010-2011 academic year beginning in January. Scholarship applications are submitted using an online system called STARS, accessible from the Cochise College home page at www.cochise.edu.
Scholarship awards are made after July 1. Call the Cochise College Foundation at (520) 417-4100 for additional information.
Students applying for federal and state financial aid are encouraged to do so as soon as possible after January 1 in the year they plan to attend school. In order to apply, students need to have a copy of their previous year's tax returns or, if they are dependents, their parent's tax returns. Students can apply for financial aid at www.fafsa.gov and seek assistance from the Financial Aid Office.
College Goal Sunday, an event to help students applying for aid, is scheduled for 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31 at the Sierra Vista Campus and the Nogales/Santa Cruz Center. A similar event is planned for the Willcox Center on Saturday, Jan. 30.
