LDS Ward 1 holds supply-raiser
The Willcox 1st Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organizing a community drive to help fill some needs in our local Willcox Elementary and Middle Schools.
Items that are being collected include:
Liquid Tylenol
Robitussin DM
Cough Drops
Hand Sanitizer
Kleenex Tissue (any brand)
Sweatpants for children in Kindergarten thru 4th grade
If you can help with donations of any of the above items, you may drop them off at the Willcox Elementary School (Susan Poire is the school nurse and contact person there) or at the Willcox Family Dental office on Rex Allen Drive (with Nan Cambern being the contact person there). Donations will be accepted through Dec. 18.
Together with your help and involvement, we can help serve this need for the children in our area during this tough cold and flu season.
For more information, contact Teresa Mills at 384-3778.
Food Pantry Christmas boxes
For Christmas boxes from Willcox Community Food Pantry, please go to DES and get your referral. Boxes will be given out Wednesday, Dec. 16 through Friday, Dec. 18.
We are appealing to the community for food and donations. This is very important to our success in taking care of this need.
Democrats to meet Dec. 5
The Northern Cochise County Democratic Club will hold its last meeting of 2009 on Saturday, Dec. 5 at the Benson City Council Chambers, 120 W. 6th Street.
Felecia Rotellini, candidate for Attorney General, will be our main speaker. We will also have Winston Grant, representing Rodney Glassman, who is running an exploratory campaign as a candidate for the State Senate.
We invite everyone to come meet these candidates, as well as our new officers for the coming year.
Holiday Support Group to meet
The holidays are here and Hospice wants to invite you to attend our Holiday Support Group. For those who have lost a loved one, it can be a particularly difficult time when surrounded by messages to be merry and joyful. The Holiday Grief Support Group is free of charge.
We will share ideas on surviving the holidays and continuing your healing. Knowing that you are not alone can lighten your load and sharing with others can bring comfort. All those who have lost a loved one (not just those who have used Hospice) are welcome. Come join us in remembering and honoring those dear to us.
The Holiday Support Group meets Thursday, Dec. 17, from 3-4:30 p.m. at the Charles W. Leighton, Jr. Hospice Office, 524 W. Maley Place in Willcox.
You do not need to call to attend the Holiday Support Group.
Make NCNH holidays special
It's that time of year again, Christmas is near. At Northern Cochise Nursing Home, we always try to make it a very special time. Many of our residents have no family near, so our staff and our community become their family.
We will have an "Angel Board" that will be hung in the nursing home on Nov. 30.
Please come in and pick an angel. On the back of each angel is the information you will need to choose or make a gift (i.e. male, female, size etc.).
Be an angel this special season and pick one of our angels to show you care.
Free movie to help learning disabled
Willcox School District has a parent group called the "Coalition of Partners for Excellence". We have a wonderful video titled "It's So Much Work to Be Your Friend: Helping the Learning Disabled Child Find Social Success". It is 90 minutes long and it is worth seeing. The best part is that it is FREE. It will be at the Willcox School District office at 480 N. Bisbee, Wednesday, Dec. 2, from 6-7:30 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Call Rob Jones, Special Services Director, at 384-8736 for more information.
Salvation Army bell ringers needed
The Willcox Salvation Army is asking for bell ringer volunteers to assist with holiday kettle collections.
Our local Willcox chapter of the Salvation Army is self-funded through donations provided from individuals, and business within our community. During the holiday season and winter months, the Salvation Army is called upon the most to assist those in need. The donations received through our holiday kettles are critical in providing emergency assistance to individuals and families in need.
Please consider volunteering your time to Ring our Bell this holiday season. If you would like to volunteer for the Salvation Army, please contact Penney Bell at 520-766-4231.

Advent Brunch at TLC on Saturday
At this time of year often we women are overwhelmed by the preparations for the season that include gift purchase, holiday baking, festive cooking, children's programs, and extra parties in addition to the commitments of a regular routine. We tend to lose ourselves in busyness while the spiritual reason for Christmas becomes dim or lost. Advent, the month before Christmas, is set aside for getting ready and waiting for the Christ child.
Trinity Lutheran Church invites the women of Willcox to participate in a time of peace and inspiration. Join us for food, fellowship, singing and an inspiring speaker. There is no charge, but reservations are required. Call the church at 384-2155 and leave your name to reserve your special place. This event is funded by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.
The Advent Brunch will be held Saturday, Dec. 5 at 10 a.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church 111 North Bisbee Ave. Speaker Pastor Kim Sterner will speak on "How Long Must We Wait, O Lord?"
Pastor Kim is Pastor of Bethel Lutheran in Phoenix. She has a special heart for the country of Haiti and with her congregation raises money to purchase pigs. She will share her experiences with us in the context of an Advent meditation. We are taking a free will offering to support her ministry in Haiti.
