Rotary to hold 50/50 drawing to raise funds for Willcox Fourth of July fireworks show

We've all heard the term "Christmas in July," but "July in Christmas?" What's up with that?

Despite the decidedly wintry chill in the air, the Willcox Rotary Club wants area residents to be thinking "Fourth of July," or more specifically -- fireworks.

"The City of Willcox Fire Department has done fundraising for the fireworks with varying degrees of success," said City Manager Pat McCourt, who is also an active Rotarian. "The community has been supportive, but it's getting tougher and tougher."

So, McCourt approached the Willcox club with the idea of a 50-50 raffle.

The cost will be $20 per ticket, with sales limited to a total of 500 tickets, making the chances of winning one in 500 if all the tickets are sold.

"If we sell them all, we'll have a total of $10,000 -- $5,000 for each party," said McCourt, explaining that half the money will go to the fire department for fireworks, while the other half will go to the winner of the drawing.

The Rotary Club plans to hold that drawing at its meeting at Noon on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2010, he said.

If the winner is not present, the Rotary President will make arrangements to present the winner a check from the club, McCourt said.

Checks should be made payable to the "Willcox Rotary," which planned to begin selling tickets Tuesday, Dec. 1.

Ticket sales will continue until the time of the drawing, but only cash will be accepted during the final week.

The Willcox City Council gave its unanimous approval to the fundraising effort at its Sept. 21 meeting.

"This fundraiser will give all an opportunity to further assist the Public Safety Department to purchase fireworks," McCourt told the council.

He then encouraged all attending the council meeting to buy raffle tickets.
