Want to run for Willcox City Council?

City Clerk Cristina Whelan says candidate packets are now available at City Hall, 101 S. Railroad Ave., Suite B, in Willcox.

The completed candidate packets and nominating petitions are due in City Hall by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9.

Four council seats with four-year terms will be on the March 9, 2010 primary ballot.

Incumbents whose terms are complete in June 2010 are Mayor Gerald "Sam" Lindsey, Vice Mayor Larry Schultz, Councilman Jimmy Norris, and Councilwoman Monika Cronberg.

Lindsey was appointed to the council on Feb. 21, 2008; and Schultz was appointed on May 11, 2007.

Norris was appointed on Nov. 5, 2004, and then elected on June 1, 2006. Cronberg was also elected on June 1, 2006.

At least 13 and no more than 26 signatures are required on the nomination petition to run for the council according to Arizona state law.

Any candidate receiving a majority of all votes cast at the primary election will be declared elected without running in the general election, scheduled for May 18, 2010.

To be a council candidate, you must be at least 18, a registered voter and a city resident for at least one year. A person convicted of a felony cannot serve as a council member until civil rights have been restored.

The polling place has been changed from the Cochise County Service Center to the City Complex building at 300 W. Rex Allen Drive.

City council members hold four-year overlapping terms. The new council members will begin their terms in June 2010.

Council members not required to run this year are Stephen Klump and Chris Donahue, who were both elected in 2008; as well as Elwood "Woody" Johnson, who was elected in 2004 and re-elected in 2008.

The voter registration deadline is Feb. 8, 2010.

The election is open to all registered voters within the city limits.
