Last fall, Megan Skiles won the Arizona FFA creed speaking contest earning the right to compete at the national level. Last week, she headed out with five other members of the San Simon FFA chapter for Indianapolis, Ind., and the National FFA Convention. While other members were headed to spend a fun week mingling with FFA chapters from around the country learning to "Lead Out Loud", Megan was preparing to compete in the National FFA creed speaking contest with participants from all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Megan, the daughter of Michael and Kristen Skiles of Bowie, has worked extremely hard over the past year to reach the national level of competition. She started by placing in the top two at the chapter level, advancing to the district level where she once again placed in the top two. This allowed her to advance to the state level. The creed speaking contest includes reciting the FFA Creed, and then answering three questions that are different at each level of competition. The FFA Creed, which outlines the beliefs of the National FFA Organization, is memorized by over 100,000 students each year. Each student is striving to obtain the level of skill in this competition that Megan has already achieved.

On Thursday, Oct. 23, Megan recited the FFA Creed twice. Megan won her preliminary flight, and did very well in the semi-final round. During her preliminary flight, Megan skillfully recited the creed, making it sound like her own speech as opposed to something she had to memorize. She answered her questions as a member who knows what FFA is about. Megan's performance only improved in the semi-final round.

On Thursday evening a banquet was held for all of the creed speaking participants, their advisors, and parents where the results were revealed. After a day filled with curiosity and waiting, the results showed that Megan Skiles had placed fifth overall. Megan did extremely well competing on the national level. The San Simon FFA Chapter, Arizona Association FFA, and the University of Arizona's Jacobs-Cline Society would like to congratulate Megan on her amazing accomplishment.
