Willcox Border Patrol agents arrested a male Mexican national illegally in the United States near San Simon last Tuesday.
The man had been entered into the Automated Integrated Fingerprint Identification System (AIFIS).
A records check revealed that he has an extensive criminal history; including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse and a conviction for smuggling illegal aliens.
The man was held for further processing, said Public Information Officer Jorge Alex Gomez.
"As the Border Patrol continues to secure our nation's borders, illegal aliens with serious criminal convictions are frequently apprehended," he said.
Child abusers, smugglers, aggravated felons and other criminal aliens present a clear threat to the safety and security of communities throughout the United States, Gomez said.
The use of reliable records databases, such as IAFIS, allows the Border Patrol to identify the criminal element attempting to make its way further into our country illegally, he said.
The same day, Willcox agents stopped a vehicle near Dos Cabezas, which was seen traveling at a high rate of speed before driving through a homeowner's fence, Gomez said.
Agents witnessed four people fleeing the scene into the desert.
A search of the abandoned vehicle revealed 12 bundles of marijuana. No estimated weight or value was available at press time.
Tucson Sector agents have seized more than 1.1 million pounds of marijuana during the first 10 months of fiscal year 2009, Gomez said.
"With the agents' vigilance, we ensure that this, and other illegal drugs do not make it into our communities," he said.
