SIERRA VISTA - Arizona Department of Public Safety officers seized more than 300 pounds of marijuana after a high-speed chase Friday morning on Interstate 10 near Benson.

Fernando Sanchez, 23, of Mexico was booked on numerous felony charges, the department said.

At about 7 a.m., an officer with the department tried to stop a 2000 Jeep Cherokee that the officer thought was following too close. Sanchez, the driver, accelerated the vehicle, reaching speeds of more than 110 mph for about three miles, troopers said. He then braked hard and jumped from the Jeep about nine miles west of Benson, fled into the desert and hid among the brush. The vehicle was still in gear, and eventually continued down into an embankment and became stuck.

Bundles of marijuana were found inside the Jeep.

A Department of Public Safety dog named Mack helped track down Sanchez and detain him until officers arrived.

Sanchez was treated at the scene for bite wounds.
