Rita Riggs Awarded NRCD's Bakarich Scholarship
The Willcox-San Simon Natural Resource Conservation District (NRCD) is awarding Rita Riggs with its annual Page Bakarich Scholarship for $1,000.
Rita is the daughter of Clay and Karen Riggs of Willcox. She graduated from Willcox High School in 2006 with a long list of awards and accolades from her participation in the Willcox Agriscience program and FFA. She wrote in her scholarship application, "I learned the importance of sustainable land use practices, growing up in a ranching family, who for generations have practiced sustainable ranching techniques".
Rita is now entering her senior year at the University of Arizona with a 3.5 GPA, majoring in Mining Engineering. Her decision to study in this field was based on a desire to combine her interest in ranching with the environmental field to benefit Arizona's agricultural and natural resources.
The Willcox-San Simon Natural Resource Conservation District (NRCD) supervisors said, "We are proud to recognize Rita. She is an exceptional young lady who reflects well upon the memory of Page Bakarich. We are pleased to be able to continue this scholarship program, and help local students pursue careers in natural resource related fields."
The scholarship is in the name of Page Bakarich who taught Vocational Agriculture in Willcox for 37 years, and was an active member on the Willcox-San Simon Natural Resource Conservation District board. Since the beginning of the scholarship program, $10,050 has been awarded in scholarships to ten students.
