Willcox FFA named Arizona's #1 Chapter

Members thrive at 80th Annual State FFA Leadership Conference

Willcox FFA members had an outstanding conference this year at the 80th State Arizona FFA Leadership Conference held in Tucson June 11th -13th. Willcox FFA members attended workshops and sessions, were inspired by State FFA Officer session themes, showed their talents and brought back to Willcox numerous awards.

The Willcox FFA Chapter was recognized as the premier chapter in Arizona receiving a Superior Gold Rating in the National Superior Chapter Award Program and were ranked 1st out of 73 chapters across the state. Alanna Riggs and Hannah Farbo, outgoing chapter officers, were on stage at the First session to receive the award. Because of the chapter's Gold Rating, Willcox FFA had the honor of having dinner with National FFA Officer Regina Holliday, Southern Vice President from Georgia.


In the Career Development Events, Reba Klump represented Willcox and the Gila Southern District in the Extemporaneous Public Speaking Contest. Also representing the chapter as well as the district in the Parliamentary Procedure contest were Cameron Bonner, Hannah Farbo, Chance Fraze, Luke Reising, Cory Thompson and Alyssa Yentsch. Chance Fraze, Carolie Estes, Jordyn Clem, Tyler Smith, Shalyn Spence, Tony Vasquez and Clary Cunningham showed their knowledge of FFA and parliamentary procedure in the Conduct of Meetings contest.

Competing in the annual Farm Bureau Discussion Meet were Alanna Riggs and Reba Klump. Alanna and Reba competed in different flights where they both qualified for the Final round. Alanna came up the winner earning a $500 savings bond and both of them received a $100 savings bond for being finalists.

In the newly added talent contest this year, Paolo Aguilera and Chance Fraze wowed the judges earning the opportunity to play in the talent review on Friday and were also selected as two out of four participants allowed too perform in a session (there were four sessions). Paolo played his guitar and had the crowd waving their cell phone lights in the third session as he sang "The Cowboy Rides away" by George Strait. Chance and his Violin earned the prestigious opportunity to open the Fourth and final session with the National Anthem.

In the proficiency award areas, Willcox captured seven of twenty-four award areas. Westen Haas won both the Specialty Crop and Diversified Crop Production Awards, Megan Dunlap won both the Beef Production entrepreneurship and Small Animal Care Awards. Wes Ely was awarded the Diversified Agriculture Production award, Cynthia Judd won the Grain Production Award, and JJ Moss received the Poultry Production Award. Each award came with a plaque and $300.

Based upon their outstanding SAE's, Megan Dunlap was named State finalist for both the State Star Farmer Award and the Star Placement award. Westen Haas was named the State winner of the State Star in Ag Placement Award and received a plaque and $500.

Alanna Riggs and Westen Haas received their State FFA scholarships. Alanna received the $500 Carnell Sipes Memorial Scholarship and Westen received the $1500 Emil M. Rovey Memorial Scholarship.

Thirteen members of the Willcox High School Senior Agriculture class received their State Degree after the completion of several requirements based on their Supervised Agricultural Experiences. The recipients were: Shelby Bonner, Megan Dunlap, Wes Ely, Edward Estavillo, Hannah Farbo, Westen Haas, Cynthia Judd, Joseph McAndrew, JJ Moss, Alanna Riggs, RK Rockhill, Wyatt Shannon, and Alyssa Yentsch. Willcox FFA had the most State Degree recipients out of all of the chapters in the state.

2008 graduate Bridger Skaarer was recognized for earning the coveted American Degree to be bestowed at the National FFA Convention.
