The Sunsites Community Golf Association is planning a "Red, White and Blue" tournament at Shadow Mount Golf Course as part of the community's Fourth of July Celebration.

Format will be three-person best ball.

Registration will be at 8 a.m. followed by a shot gun start at 9 a.m. Entry fee is $10 for Shadow Mountain Golf Course members and $25 for non-members. Prizes will be awarded first low gross and first, second and third places.

The July 4 tournament is one of a series being planned for the remainder of the summer, SCGA officials said.

There also will be a nine-hole shootout on July 5. Format is for the low score/scores on each hole to drop out until a winner is determined. Entry fee is $10, plus $5 for a cart. Seventy-five percent of entry fees will be returned as prizes.

Other shootouts are scheduled June, July and August. Information is available at www.sunsitesgolf.org or by call the clubhouse at 520-826-3412.

The tournaments are part the SCGA management team's plan for attracting new golfers from the local community and from the surrounding area to test their skills over the 18-hole course, which is in the best condition in a number of years.

The golf course narrowly escaped closure in September 2008 before the community rallied about a small group of residents who formed a Limited Liability Corporation to negotiate a lease with the owner and develop a management plan aimed at eventually making the golf course self-supporting.

Golfers and non-golfers alike are providing financial support for keeping the golf course alive and growing through club memberships, SCGA memberships and donations.

Most of the actual work around the golf course is being accomplished by volunteers. Work days have attracted as many as 80 persons to chop, saw, rake and hoe.

And between work days, volunteers are out early nearly every day mowing greens and tee boxes and fairways, and doing any other kinds of tidying up work that is needed to improve course conditions.

All of this work to improve the course, along with a strong promotional and advertising campaign, has resulted in a sharp increase in play as Shadow Mountain's attraction grows outside the local area.

At a time when other golf courses reportedly are struggling, or even closing, the management plan for Shadow Mountain is on right on track, but, as officials point out, there is a lot of work still to be done. And they express confidence will be done, because Sunsites residents know what the golf course means to the community.
