Zane Webster, 8th grade student from San Simon School, was recently named Arizona State Champion in the Boys Goat Tying for the Arizona Wrangler Division Junior High School Rodeo Association.
The state finals were held in Payson, Arizona May 1-3, 2009. He was awarded a Cactus Saddlery trophy saddle for his championship, and a Gary Gist Buckle for winning the average in the boys goat tying. Zane also won 3rd high individual in the chute dogging and won a beautiful Kendra Williams custom breast collar. He won a Kendra Williams custom leather halter for 4th high individual in the tie down calf roping. He was also in the top 10 in team roping, along with his partner Colton Clem, and ribbon roping with his partner, Arianna Assinni.
Local sponsors of the Arizona Wrangler Division Junior High School Rodeo Finals were Ft. Bowie Vineyards and Orchard Products, Hale Pecans, and Chiricahua Welding. A big thank you to the Eastman, Kremer, and Hale Families for their support of youth rodeo.
Zane is having a Mexican Dinner fundraiser on Tuesday, June 16, to raise money for the trip to finals. It will be held at the San Simon School cafeteria from 5:30 to 8 p.m. All are welcome!
With his success, Zane has earned a position on the Arizona State Wrangler Junior High Rodeo Team and will be traveling with his fellow teammates to Gallup, New Mexico from June 28th thru July 4th to compete at the 5th Annual Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo (WJHFR) in the boys goat tying, chute dogging, and tie down calf roping. This is Zane's third , and final, year to qualify for the WJHFR. The next level of rodeo for Zane will be the National High School Rodeo Association.
Featuring more than 1,000 contestants from 47 states, Canadian provinces and Australia, the Wrangler Junior High Finals is the world's largest junior high rodeo. In addition to competing for more than $75,000 in prizes, WJHFR contestants will also be vying for more than $50,000 in college scholarships and the chance to be named the Wrangler Junior High Finals Rodeo National Champion. To earn this title, contestants must finish in the top 20 after two go-rounds of intense competition before advancing on to Saturday's final championship performance. Again, this year, the Saturday championship performance will be televised nationally as a part of the "20X Rodeo High" telecast series.
