The incident occurred at 11:41 a.m. Sunday on Interstate 10 near milepost 302.
Heather Portz, 28, was killed after the gray 2000 Jeep Cherokee she was driving was struck by another car traveling in the same direction. The Jeep rolled into the median. Portz was transported to Benson Hospital where she was pronounced dead. A male passenger in the Jeep was not hurt.
Witnesses last saw the hit and run vehicle going westbound on I-10.
DPS Officer Derek Ortiz said the only description of the hit and run vehicle is that it was a four-door red compact, driven by a man wearing a baseball cap.
Ortiz said it was likely the car would have gray or silver paint transfer from the victim's vehicle on its rear quarter panel.
