Willcox-San Simon NRCD offers Page Bakarich Scholarship

Published: Wednesday, April 15, 2009 2:24 PM CDT
The Page Bakarich Scholarship was established in memory of Page Bakarich, our long time friend, NRCD board member, and Willcox Vocational Agriculture teacher of 37 years. He inspired all of us with extensive knowledge of the land, Arizona history, and stories of desert lore. We are proud to be able to continue this scholarship program in his name.

The Willcox-San Simon Natural Resources Conservation District (NRCD) is offering its 2009 Page Bakarich Scholarship of $1,000 for one year. Since the beginning of the scholarship program in 2001, $9,050 in scholarships has been awarded to nine deserving students.

To qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

  • Applicants must have graduated from a school in the Willcox-San Simon NRCD area, or resided within the District.

  • Applicants must be at least a junior in college, with a C (2.0) grade point average or above.

  • Applicant's course of study must be related to conservation or agriculture.

Selection will be based on financial need, academic achievement, personal character and goals.

Applications can be obtained from the Willcox-San Simon NRCD at 656 N. Bisbee Ave., Willcox, (520) 384-2229 ext. 101. The applications, along with supporting materials, must be submitted to the Willcox-San Simon NRCD office no later than 4:30 p.m., Friday, May 29, 2009.

We encourage eligible students to apply and our scholarship committee is looking forward to receiving your application.

" Thanks for the news. this brings back some very old memories. Page Bakarich was mine and my brothers teacher when he was a young man. But he was more than just a teacher.

We didn't have running water in our house and he came and helped install the pipe into the house. This man went beyond the call of being just a teacher. "
