Today's libraries can "help you discover a world of knowledge, both in person and online."

That according to a proclamation read by Mayor Sam Lindsey Monday evening, announcing National Library Week beginning Sunday.

Tom Miner, director of the city's Elsie S. Hogan Library, calls it "the perfect time to discover how worlds connect @ your library."

That happens to be the theme of library week, held this year from Sunday, April 12 to Saturday, April 18 - "Worlds connect @ your library."

It's also a time "to celebrate the contributions of libraries, librarians, and library workers in schools, campuses, and communities nationwide," Miner said.

The mayor read the official proclamation at the April 6 city council meeting.

"Our nation's schools, academic, public and special libraries make a difference in the lives of millions of Americans, today, more than ever..."

"Library use is up nationwide among all types of library users, continuing a decade-long trend," Lindsey read.

"Libraries are part of the American dream - places for opportunity, education, self-help and lifelong learning."

They play "a vital role in supporting the quality of life in their communities;" along with being "a key player in the national discourse on intellectual freedom, equity of access, and narrowing the 'digital divide,'" he read.

Libraries can "help you discover a world of knowledge, both in person and online, as well as personal service and assistance in finding what you need when you need it," Lindsey said.

"Librarians are trained professionals, helping people of all ages and backgrounds find and interpret the information they need to live, learn, and work in a challenging economy," he said.

Lindsey encouraged "all residents to visit the library this week to take advantage of the wonderful library resources available, and thank their librarians and library workers for making information accessible to all who walk through the library's doors."

The Elsie S. Hogan Library is celebrating by holding contests and programs, including a daily book drawing, a bookmark making contest, and after school program, and a teen reader's theater.

The week will end with a special family movie, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 18.

"We hope everyone will bring the whole family and come help the librarians celebrate this special week," Miner said.

"Everyday, libraries in big cities and small towns, colleges and universities, in schools and in businesses, help transform their communities," he said.

"At our library, people of all backgrounds come together for city or library-sponsored community meetings, lectures and programs; for book discussions, author signings, or poetry readings," said Miner.

They also go to the library "to do research with the assistance of a trained professional; to get help in finding better-paying jobs by searching our job listings, or preparing or updating their resume; to use our free Internet and Wi-Fi service; or to find a quiet, comfortable place for their own reading pleasure; or just to find some homework help," he said.

"We try to offer something for everyone in the community," Miner added.

The library is open 46 hours per week.

Its new hours are Monday through Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thursday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The library is closed on Sundays and Holidays.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April.
