Free birding tour offered March 7

Homer Hansen, chairman of Wings Over Willcox, is offering a free birding tour for Willcox and the surrounding communities.

The tour will meet at the Willcox Community Center, on Saturday, March 7, and go out for two and one-half hours from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to view birds.

Calling it a "family and community-oriented event," Hansen said the tour is open to everyone, including new and beginning birders.

Council meeting

The Willcox Elementary School Parent Advisory Council will meet on Wednesday, March 4, at 5 p.m. in the elementary school library. For more information, call the school office at 384-4216.

Willcox FFA Week Blowout event

FFA Week Blowout event will be held Friday, Feb. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Willcox High School Gym

The evening is free to everyone in celebration of FFA Week. Events include Bungee run, Obstacle Course, Jousting, and Basketball.

WHS Showcase set for March 11

Willcox High School is holding a "Showcase" on Wednesday, March 11 at the WHS Gymnasium promoting student activities, athletics, clubs, classes, etc. Students from the high school and 8th graders from area schools will attend sessions in the morning from 8 a.m. - noon. Parents and others from surrounding communities are encouraged to attend the evening session from 6:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. Come on out and see what Willcox High School has to offer. American Legion scholarship

American Legion Tenley Lopez Post 20 in Willcox sponsors the "Gale Barton Memorial Scholarship." All graduating seniors from our area high schools or graduating seniors participating in a home school program are eligible to participate in the "Gale Barton Memorial Scholarship" program.

This program is intended to assist those graduating seniors who are pursuing secondary education. This includes those intending to attend a four year college/university program, those intending to attend a community college to pursue an Associate Degree and also those students planning to attend a trade school program.

You may obtain an application and information on submitting your application at the counseling office of our area high schools or by contacting Don Ulses at (520) 766-0526.

Submission deadline is Wednesday, April 1.

Apply for LCO Alpha scholarship

The Arizona Alpha Chapter of Lambda Chi Omega Sorority is offering a scholarship to a graduating high school senior or alumnus from the Willcox area. The amount of the scholarship is $500 biannually for full time students, renewable each year when a minimum of twelve credits per semester are taken consecutively at a university, community college, trade, or technical school. Proceeds from the sorority's annual rummage sale fund the scholarship program.

Applications, as well as detailed information regarding qualification requirements, may be picked up at either the WHS Counselor's Office or room # 301 in the Math Department. During school vacations, applications may be obtained by contacting a sorority member. All completed scholarship forms must be returned to the Alpha Chapter of Lambda Chi Omega Sorority, P.O. Box 207, Willcox, AZ 85644 no later than March 31, 2009.

2008 scholarship winners were Caitlin Davis and Danelle Thompson. Caitlin currently attends Eastern Arizona College where she is getting closer to her goal of becoming a Dental Hygienist. She works one day a week as a Dental Assistant at and is also employed in the Records and Registration Department of EAC. Danelle is completing her courses at the Eastern Arizona Academy of Cosmetology and would like to begin a career in the field of cosmetology during 2009.

Volunteers needed for spay clinics

Cochise County Humane Society, a 501c3 organization, is looking for volunteers to assist at spay/neuter clinics in the Willcox area. Work consists of checking in/out clients and collecting payments. Needed two days per week, usually Thursday and Friday, hours from 7 a.m.-1 p.m., or Noon-5 p.m. Will train. For more information, call Yvonne at 520-803-7407.

Democrats to meet in Willcox

The Northern Cochise County Democrats will meet in Willcox on Saturday, Feb. 28 at the TA Truck Stop, 1501 N. Ft. Grant Road, from 10 a.m. to noon

Our speakers will be Telly Stanger, Manager, Community Economic Development and Agriculture (SSVEC) and Wayne Crane, Public Relations Manager (SSVEC). Stanger will discuss SSVEC's Renewable Energy Rebate Program and SSVEC's Time of Use Program. Crane will discuss SSVEC's Operation Round Up Program.

These programs greatly benefit the general public, and it would serve us all to learn more about them. Everyone is welcome.

Spaghetti dinner fundraiser Saturday

You are invited to attend spaghetti dinner fundraiser at the Willcox United Methodist Church, 124 S Curtis on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 6 p.m. The fundraiser is in support of Cameron Bonner's trip to Australia (see the article at this link http://www.willcoxrangenews.com/articles/2009/02/18/sports/sports04.txt).

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 3 - 10 and free for children under age 3. Entertainment will be provided by the Breens, Joshua Collins and others.
