SIERRA VISTA - Arizona motorists will soon have to remove frames or any covering that obscures the name of the state on their license plate or face a fine.

An amendment to Arizona Revised Statute 28-2354 will take effect Jan. 1, requiring any vehicle with an Arizona license plate to have the state name clearly visible, according to the Department of Public Safety and Arizona Department of Transportation.

The change will not apply to out-of-state license plates.

This license plate would be considered in violation of the new law.

One of the reasons cited by the DPS for the amendment is so that "citizens who witness a crime involving a motor vehicle or otherwise recognize a license plate from a broadcast for an Amber Alert or other attempt to locate will (be) better able to identify the 'Arizona' and the characters on the plate."

Under the new law, any law enforcement officer may pull over a vehicle if the state name is not clearly visible. Fines can range from $110 to $200 for violation of the law.
