National blacksmith championships
By Carol Broeder/Arizona Range News
Looking for a good blacksmith?
Some of the best in the world will be in Willcox this weekend for the 2009 "World Championship Blacksmith" National Championship.
It will run from Thursday, Jan. 29 through Saturday, Jan. 31, at Quail Park.
There will be competitors from the United States as well as some international entries.
The Championship Blacksmith Association has an international membership of more than 325 members from all over the United States and eight other countries.
That includes 15 women and one member who is only 15 years old.
The association holds six competitions during the year, the final one being the "World Championship Finals" in January.
They compete throughout the year to accumulate points to be able to compete in the National Finals.
Willcox is the host city for this year's finals, which will be held under a yellow and white striped tent at the Quail Park Rodeo Grounds on Fort Grant Road.
"We're coming from all throughout the United States to compete in Willcox, Ariz.," said Lorraine Trnka, the association's business manager.
"Competitors are vying for the coveted national championship and to visit the fair city of Willcox," she told the Range News.
With about 50 competitors lined up as of press time, the competitions will be from 1 p.m. until class is complete each day.
Blacksmith and Ferrier clinics will be held from 8 a.m. until noon each day.
The final competition on Saturday will be the making of horseshoes and shoeing some local horses.
Event organizer Delcie Schultz has sought "13 gentle horses that want new shoes at no cost" for the upcoming event.
"This is an opportunity to see true craftsman at their best and have a fun weekend as well," Schultz said.
Admission is free.
There will be several vendors in the area, as well as food concessions and "lots of fun things to do," she said.
"Don't miss a chance to experience our heritage first hand."
For those interested in the clinics, the fee is $300 for all three days. Or one can become a member for $200 and the clinics are free.
"You can join the association right at the clinics and receive all the membership benefits," Trnka told the Range News.
