Poetry submission deadline Jan. 9
A poetry contest for youth and adults will be held during the 16th Annual Wings Over Willcox Birding and Nature Festival (WOW), Jan. 14-18, 2009. The poetry contest theme is birds, nature or wildlife of Southeast Arizona. The poem should not exceed 20 lines and should be submitted to the Willcox Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture by Jan. 9, 2009. Contest entry forms are available at the Chamber.
Judging categories for youth will be High School, Middle School and Elementary School. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes will be awarded in each category. There is no fee to enter.
For the adult poetry contest, one first prize winner will be selected and will receive two tickets to the WOW Banquet on Saturday, Jan. 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. In addition, the first prize winner will be asked to read the winning poem at the banquet. Lucy Baca is coordinating this contest and will select local judges. Prizes will also be awarded to the 2nd and 3rd place winners

Art show during Wings festival
Bucko's Coffees and Coronado Vineyards are hosting "Vanishing Species - Cowboys and Birds" Jan. 15-18 at Coronado Vineyards in Willcox.
"Vanishing Species" is a collection of oil paintings and watercolors by local artist Jean Bohlender, featuring not so uncommon birds in this area, a local farrier - Wade Kaiser, cows, and cowboys, including a local surprise portrait.
The cowboy paintings are mainly a series entitled "Branding On the Moon", depicting the cowboys of the Moon Ranch in Cliff, NM during spring branding and fall round up.
Jean Chandanais Bohlender is a member of the Willcox Art League, and her work is hung locally in Bucko's Coffees on Railroad Ave. Her work can also be viewed at the Chiricahua Gallery in Rodeo, NM, and the Seedboat Gallery in Silver City.

Library Storytime to begin Thursday
The Elsie S. Hogan Community Library announces that StoryTime, for pre-school age kids, will be kicking off 2009 with Cats and Lions. The program will let children have lots of fun reading, doing crafts, and spending time with their parents. The safe environment lets them learn pre-school activities, such as coloring, painting, the alphabet, numbers recognition, and other early childhood development skills.
The new eight-week session will begin on Thursday, Jan. 8, at 9 a.m. at the Elsie S. Hogan Community Library. So come join us for a program of fun and games.

Images of Ireland photo presentation
Willcox area photographers are pleased to announce a program of exquisite photographs by Sara and Bill Nolan taken on their recent trip to Ireland. The Nolans will narrate the program and explain some of the photographic techniques they used to capture the images.
The public is invited to the presentation and there is no admission charge. The presentation will be held at the SSVEC Boardroom, 350 N. Haskell Avenue, Willcox, on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7 p.m.
Free Diabetes course. Jan 14
Anne Hummel, RN and Certified Diabetes Educator, will be presenting her free diabetes course in Willcox beginning Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 1:30 p.m. with registration, at the Northern Cochise Community Hospital, 901 West Rex Allen Drive. The six-session, 12-hour course will continue on Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. through Feb. 18.
This course is appropriate for people with diabetes, pre diabetes, their families and friends who support them and the professionals who treat them. All areas of diabetes self care and management will be discussed: medications, dietary management, exercise, stress management, complications, foot care, monitoring, and new technology are some examples.
Good diabetes management is an everyday affair. This is the 12th year this course has been offered, and hundreds of people have benefited from the knowledge and skills they needed to take care of themselves and work better with their physicians to determine the best treatment for them. No registration prior to Jan. 14 is required. Course materials will be provided with free course. Directions to the hospital may be obtained be calling 384-3541 ext. 395.
Blood Drive Jan. 8 at Methodist church
The American Red Cross Arizona Blood Services Region will hold a blood drive on Thursday, Jan. 8, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the United Methodist Church, 127 Curtis Ave., Willcox.
All presenting donors will receive a free long sleeve t-shirt and also be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of three $250 gift cards.
Donors can schedule an appointment for their donation by calling 1-800-GiveLife (1-800-448-3543).
Blood donors must be in good general health, at least 16 years old (16 and 17 year olds need signed Red Cross parental consent form) and weigh at least 110 pounds. The Red Cross recommends that donors eat a small low-fat meal or snack and drink plenty of extra non-caffeinated fluids two to four hours before donating.
The entire donation process takes about an hour, and includes donor screening, a mini-physical exam, about 10 minutes for drawing a pint of blood, and post-donation refreshments. Donors can give whole blood every 56 days.

The Art League of Willcox and the Willcox Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring the Sulphur Springs Valley 13th International Miniature and Small Works Art Show.
Entry forms are available from Art League of Willcox, P.O. Box 333 Willcox, Arizona 85643. Entries must reach the Art League by Jan. 30.
The miniatures show will be open to the public from Feb. 2 through March 1 at the Willcox Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture building, 1500 Circle I Road at the 340 exit of Interstate 10 in Willcox.
