Megan Skiles, a freshman at San Simon High School, won the Arizona FFA State Creed Speaking contest on Friday, Dec. 4. The contest was held at the ASU East campus. The FFA creed consists of five lengthy paragraphs of which the students must recite without missing a word. Contestants are judged based on a variety of criteria including delivery, consistency, and poise. They are also asked three questions that pertain to the creed and agriculture. A contestant's knowledge and ability to answer the questions with confidence are also part of the score. Megan competed against 15 other contestants, all of whom were first or second place from their respective Arizona FFA Districts. The contestants go through a series of creed speaking contests that begin at the local level. Arizona has eighty local chapters that have a freshman membership of approximately 3,000 students. Chapter winners go on to compete at their Arizona FFA District Creed Speaking Contest. The District winners then go to the state competition. Megan now has the distinction of representing Arizona at the National FFA Convention next October in Indianapolis, Ind. It has been more than 25 years since a student from San Simon High School has won the state creed speaking contest.
The San Simon FFA Chapter creed speaking contest was held on Oct. 8. Colton Morris and Megan Skiles were the representatives from the local chapter that went on to the district competition. San Simon held the Gila Southern District contest on Oct. 15 where Megan earned first place and Colton took fourth. This District consists of Round Valley High School, Ft. Thomas, St. David, Willcox, San Simon, Elfrida, Bowie, Duncan, Safford, Benson, and Douglas.
