School officials, teachers and school board members received good news last week when Evelyn Lathram announced at a school meeting the establishment of a new endowment to help increase student achievement in Bowie schools. The endowment will be held as a donor advised fund by the Cochise Community Foundation.

Lathram and her husband established the fund in memory of her grandparents, Albert R. and Nellie D. Spikes. During his career as Bowie teacher, principal, superintendent and ultimately Arizona state senator, A.R. Spikes was a lifelong advocate for education. He was responsible for building the current high school and the community pool among many other accomplishments. His wife, Nellie, was a grade school teacher in Bowie and San Simon.

A resident of Oro Valley, Lathram is a graduate of Bowie schools. She credits her early education for preparing her to excel in secondary studies at the University of Arizona, and now in her career as a successful computer programmer. "I am so glad to honor my grandparents' dedication to education in this way," she said. "My goal is to provide support to the Bowie schools to restore its reputation for excellence."

At the end of the school year, projects for the coming school year will be coordinated through Bowie School Superintendent Pat O'Donnell to ensure the highest priorities are put forward for funding.

Established in 1998, the Cochise Community Foundation is a permanent philanthropic endowment for the enduring benefit of Cochise County. It is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization and one of 13 affiliates of the Arizona Community Foundation. CCF enjoys centralized financial management, marketing and administrative resources provided by ACF, while its local advisory board focuses on local needs and grantmaking. For more information, contact Carol Sanger at 520-439-0595 or csanger@azfoundation.org.
