Deadlines for EQIP and WHIP, Friday

The Natural Resources Conservation Service will review all applications for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) received by December 5, 2008. These applications will be ranked for fiscal year 2009 funding. Arizona farmers and ranchers benefited from a record amount of funding in 2008, with more than $22 million in EQIP and $1.7 million in WHIP.

NRCS helped Willcox area farmers and ranchers with a broad spectrum of natural resource enhancements in 2008, including increasing irrigation efficiency, grazing land management, wildlife habitat, and more. The funding was used on conservation practices such as center pivot sprinklers, drip irrigation, livestock watering systems, and fencing, as well as incentive payments for proper management to achieve environmental benefits.

Agriculture producers are encouraged to apply throughout the year for EQIP, WHIP, and other Farm Bill conservation programs administered by NRCS. "The December 5th deadline is simply a cutoff date we set to review and rank applications for 2009 funding," said Dave Matthews, NRCS district conservationist. "Farmers and ranchers can apply whenever they are ready to plan improvements to their land's natural resources. Additional application ranking deadlines may be announced throughout the year if additional funding becomes available."

A number of changes and additions are in the 2008 Farm Bill. With EQIP, new items include:

  • Assistance to organic production: payments for conservation practices related to organic production up to $20,000 per year or $80,000 during any 6-year period

  • The overall payment limitation is reduced to $300,000 per person or legal entity over a six-year period.

NRCS plans to cost-share approved contracts at 75 percent, with 90 percent funding levels for beginning, limited resource, and socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.

NRCS has a field office in Willcox ready to help farmers and ranchers get the best use out of the land's natural resources. Visit us at 656 N. Bisbee Ave. or call (520) 384-2229 x3. Visit the web at www.az.nrcs.usda.gov to learn more about the technical and financial help NRCS provides.

Breakfast with Santa at Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity Monastery is sponsoring a "Breakfast with Santa" on Saturday, Dec. 13 from 8:30-10 a.m. The jolly old man himself, complete with bushy white beard and a jolly ho-ho, will be talking with the kids after a breakfast of pancakes (pecan and plain), sausage, juice and coffee. Breakfast will be served until 9:30. After a visit with Santa, Mrs. Claus will be in her kitchen and kids are invited to help her decorate Christmas cookies.

While Holy Trinity Monastery is well known for its Spring and Fall Festivals, this is the first time that Santa has made a stop prior to Christmas Eve. Prior Fr. Henri, O.S.B., commented, "We're looking forward to welcoming Mr. and Mrs. Claus. In recent a telephone conversation Santa informed me, that although Christmas Eve is his big night he really enjoys making a few early stops to visit with the kids. Otherwise, they're all tucked in for the night. If I'm not mistaken he said he is giving several elves time off to come, too. It will be a fun time and we invite young and young at heart to come."

Cost: Children $3.50 (under two years, no charge); adults $5; maximum per family $18. Photos with Santa:$2. There will be gifts for sale to shorten your list. Also, holiday goodies made by Santa's elves will be for sale.

Reservations are required: Call 520-720-4016 no later than December 11th. Holy Trinity Monastery is located at mile marker 302.5 on Hwy 80, near St. David.
