Conservation program sign-up deadline
The Natural Resources Conservation Service will review all applications for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) and Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) received by Dec. 5, 2008. These applications will be ranked for fiscal year 2009 funding. NRCS helped Willcox area farmers and ranchers with natural resource enhancements, including increasing irrigation efficiency, grazing land management, wildlife habitat, and more. The funding was used on conservation practices such as center pivot sprinklers, drip irrigation, livestock watering systems, and fencing, as well as incentive payments for proper management to achieve environmental benefits.
Agriculture producers are encouraged to apply throughout the year for EQIP, WHIP, and other Farm Bill conservation programs. "The Dec. 5 deadline is simply a cutoff date we set to review and rank applications for 2009 funding," said Dave Matthews, NRCS district conservationist. "Farmers and ranchers can apply whenever they are ready to plan improvements to their land's natural resources."
A number of changes and additions are in the 2008 Farm Bill. With EQIP, new items include:
Assistance to organic production: payments for conservation practices related to organic production up to $20,000 per year or $80,000 during any 6-year period
The overall payment limitation is reduced to $300,000 per person or legal entity over a six-year period.
NRCS plans to cost-share approved contracts at 75 percent, with 90 percent funding levels for beginning, limited resource, and socially disadvantaged farmers and ranchers.
