Willcox High School cross country runner Alesha Jones placed in the medals Saturday in the state 1A-2A championships, taking 11th at Cave Creek Municipal Golf Course in Phoenix. The only qualifying boy, Stephen Addington, placed in the top half of the competitors.

The 2008 Arizona State Cross Country Championships was an all-day event with all classes, 1A - 5A, competing. There were six races in the morning and six races in the afternoon. Over 1,600 athletes participated on a day that was warm, but nowhere near the heat of previous championships, and so it was a great day for running, said WHS Coach Mike Nelson.

The boys' race was at 1:50 p.m. Addington, a junior who began running as a sophomore, ran an excellent race, finishing 51st of 118 competitors with a time of 19:19 over the 3.1 mile course.

At 3:05 p.m., senior Alesha Jones represented Willcox and ran her best race of the season. Alesha was a medal winner by finishing 11th of 88 runners with a time of 22:19 over the same 3.1-mile course at Cave Creek.

The team competition was dominated by Hopi High School from northern Arizona with victories in both the boys' and girls' races. Runner-ups were Many Farms for the boys and Northland Prep for the girls.

Cody Rosengarten of Tombstone was the individual boys champion.

"Both Stephen and Alesha always run with their best effort but not always with the results that they trained and hoped for; however, this was their perfect time - their achievement matched their effort!" Nelson said following the race.
