On Tuesday, Nov. 4, the Willcox Cowgirls' Junior High softball "A" team traveled to Pomerene to take on the Lady Panthers.

Both teams looked sharp in the first two innings. The Cowgirls shut down the Panthers with some excellent work in the infield. Stephanie Ramirez and Samantha Brown combined their efforts to throw out a Lady Panther attempting to steal second. Maria Chavez and Taylor Reising also displayed some excellent glove work and a couple of sizzling throws to first base.

By the third inning, Pomerene started to make contact at the plate scoring 9 runs. The Cowgirls, however, battled back in their half of the inning, scoring 6 runs to close the gap, 9 to 6.

Willcox continued to play hard and with energy, however, came up short, as Pomerene went on to win the game, 14 to 6. Head Coach Browning was very pleased with "the overall effort through all seven innings from everyone on the team. The entire team worked hard for the entire game and never hung their heads."

Reising stayed focused on the mound, pitching all 7 innings for the Cowgirls, while Jerrica Lloyd continued to impress everyone with her positive attitude and hustle, especially running the bases.

Before last week's game, Willcox hosted the Benson Bobcats on Oct. 21 to open their 2008 Cochise Athletic Conference season. Both the Cowgirls A and B teams, with players ranging from 6th to 8th grade, played against the Bobcats.

In the "B" game, the Cowgirls started quickly scoring 8 runs in the first inning. In the third inning, Willcox pushed four more runs across the plate to shutout the Bobcats 12-0. Sabrina Gomez looked sharp at first base with her strong southpaw glove. Katlyn Sohl pitched an excellent game striking out three Bobcats and giving up only one base on balls. Congratulations to all the B team players on their first win of the season.

In the "A" game, the Cowgirls fell behind four to three after the first inning but scored three runs in the second to take a six to four lead. Benson battled back in the third to tie the game, 6-6. Willcox continued to remain focused, combining strong hitting and a good eye at the plate, to take the lead 10-6.

Benson closed the gap with 2 more runs in the fourth, however, after the dust settled, the Cowgirls trotted home three more runs to end the game with a 13 to 8 victory over the Bobcats. Stephanie Ramirez caught an excellent game along with going 3 for 3 (and a walk) at the plate. Selena Esqueda also had a solid game with the bat, scoring 3 runs along with a 100 percent on base average (4 for 4). Jerrica Lloyd chipped in with 2 hits and a walk to contribute to the Cowgirls' victory. On the mound, Courtney Purcell pitched a strong four innings earning her first win of the season.

Coach Lori Browning said, "Despite looking sluggish at times during the past two weeks in practice, we showed much more enthusiasm and hustle in a game situation. Hopefully, we can build on this victory and continue to improve."

On Oct. 28, the Cowgirls' softball teams travelled to St. David to take on the Tigers.

In the A game, the Tigers defeated the Cowgirls 10-5 in a long and tiring seven innings of softball.

In the "B" game, the Cowgirls came out on fire scoring quick three runs. But the game ended after two innings due to darkness with the Tigers ahead 9-3.
